Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice, said 1964 Republican presidential nominee Barry Goldwater. Moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue!
He was wrong on both counts.
Zeal for liberty can be (and sometimes is) taken way too far, and without moderation, even the noblest of goals is easily turned into something evil. A great example of this: the French Revolution.
The revolution began with some long-overdue reforms. It abolished the special privileges of nobles and clergy and guaranteed Frenchmen fundamental rights similar to those promised in our own Declaration of Independence and Bill of Rights. It gave France a new constitution, establishing for France a limited monarchy like that of Great Britain.

He was wrong on both counts.Seeing what has manifested today, I would say he was right on both counts.
Goldwater? YES.
Trying to compare what’s happening in the USA today to the french revolution is a bit of a stretch....
No it dont.
Our great and wonderful president a man like no other Donald J Trump will win this year election on November 3 in a landslide. A landslide like 1980. Or 1984
This author is an idiot.
The left is best thought of as a psychopathic rape gang that wants access to your family members.
Giving ground to them on any issue at any time only puts all of the people you love in ever greater jeopardy.
You’re alluding back to the gang that surrounded Lot’s house in Sodom.
Nothing new under the sun.
But mostly I was alluding to depraved, degenerate, Maoists, Marxist and every other horror since the French Revolution all mashed up into one mass murder loving filthosophy.
Give them an inch on any issue at any time for any reason and they’ll eventually take your life.
And they’ve been telling us exactly that, to our faces, in every way possible, for decades now.
Most of us just don’t want to listen. Because then they might have to get up off their hand wringing couch, take off the bow ties, and get dirty in fixing the mess we all sat on our hands and allowed to fester among us.
It wasn’t liberty they took too far, it was equality...
Well said
Marmorstein confuses liberty with license. Goldwater was right.
He obviously never studied the French Revolution, or if he did, he bought the leftist propaganda that it was all about the excesses of the monarchy and the righteousness of the lower classes.
The French Revolution was all about godless Marxism. The American Revolution pointed to God and His authority, the French Revolution pointed to man and selfish humanism.
"Liberty, Equality, and Fraternity" was the "Black Lives Matter" propaganda of it's day - and it led to the Reign of Terror.
If BLM, Antifa, Democrats, Soros, and the Globalists are not stopped, the same thing will happen here.
Guess why they changed the name of CHAZ to CHOP in Seattle? It was a direct nod to the Reign of Terror. They even said so themselves - and these people are serious about it.
The guillotine will make a comeback, right out of a horror movie. Except this time, it will all be terrifyingly real.
“he bought the leftist propaganda that it was all about the excesses of the monarchy and the righteousness of the lower classes.”
This is comparable to the French Revolution in the sense that the true aims are being concealed from the average Joes; it is being sold as a “moderate” position when it is much more radical and dangerous (just like the French Revolution).
