As many as 8,000 California prisoners to be released early in effort to stop coronavirus spread

As many as 8,000 California prisoners could be released ahead of schedule in an unprecedented attempt to stop the spread of COVID-19 inside state prisons, with more than half of the releases expected by the end of the month.

The announcement on Friday by top advisors to Gov. Gavin Newsom offered stark evidence of the dire health conditions at several California prisons. On Monday, the top medical officer for the state prison system was removed from his position following criticism of inmate transfers that are believed to have led to a much larger coronavirus problem in prisons than existed this spring.

But those convicted of violent felonies and sex crimes would be ineligible for release. Only those with a year or less left to serve would be considered eligible.

So, who knew all this time that prison was optional?

I guess the voters care more whether prisoners get sick, than that they, themselves, are safe.

We could save a lot of money by just abandoning a pretense of justice. Judges salaries, court costs and the like seem to be a complete waste.

Meanwhile he threatens to jail people for not following his unconstitutional covid-19 rules.

You’re preaching to the converted. :-)

Isn’t it interesting, though, that Twosome Newsom left the decision on whether or not to mask the inmates up to the person running each facility...

Law-abiding citizens get muzzled, perps not so much.

“Does this mean Scott Peterson, Jodi Arias, Polly Klaas’s killer, and the Golden State killer all get out of the pokey”

Are they non-violent?

Do they have less than one year left on their sentences?

I’ll presume anybody in CA prison for one of the crimes of violating COVID rules is exempt from this release.

That is a damnable lie.

The state will be in dire straights next year and they will reduce their expenditure by some $648,000,000 by releasing these cretins in the following year and it may be more.

The information available on Google says it costs $81,000 to house each prisoner on average.

8,000 x 81,000=648,000,000

and it may well cost more than that.

This is nothing more than a budget trick and they are dressing it up as something else...

Who gives a f#@k if they get sick in prison? Last week Scott Erskine died from COVID 19. He was on California’s so called death row. He raped, tortured, and murdered two little boys. 19. Hip hip hurray! Cue up “Celebrate” by Kool and the Gang. I am so glad that he did not outlive the boys mothers.

“Because criminals wandering the streets are like antibodies to Covid-19.”

Can you go into some details on this statement? Very interested in the angle (herd immunity maybe)?

No no no, masks protect from the Rona, give them masks, they are magic and they don’t need to be released.

Yes! Masks are all they need. Like my aunt at the nursing home, lock them in their rooms, seal their windows shut and give them masks.

They should call the prisons nursing homes. Then they could keep them locked up.
