I worry about Joe Biden debating Donald Trump. He should do it only under two conditions. Otherwise, he’s giving Trump unfair advantages.

That is not a good way for Biden to reintroduce himself to the American people. And, let’s not kid ourselves, these debates will be his reintroduction to most Americans, who have neither seen nor heard from him for months if not years.
Because of Covid-19, Biden has been sticking close to home, wearing a mask and social distancing. And with the coronavirus now spreading further, and Biden being a responsible individual and role model, it’s likely that he won’t be able to engage with any large groups of voters before Election Day. Therefore, the three scheduled televised debates, which will garner huge audiences, will carry more weight for him than ever.
He should not go into such a high-stakes moment ceding any advantages to Trump. Trump is badly trailing in the polls, and he needs these debates much more than Biden does to win over undecided voters. So Biden needs to make Trump pay for them in the currency of transparency and fact-checking — universal principles that will level the playing field for him and illuminate and enrich the debates for all citizens.

The day after the inauguration Biden resigns, citing ill health.
Stacy Abrams becomes president.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg resigns from the Supreme Court, citing ill health.
Abrams appoints Keith Ellison to fill the vacant spot.

I got as far as this part, looked to see what the publication was and who the author was and stopped in my tracks.
Lol! What a joke.
Their only hope is to make it even more unfairly skewed in Biden's favor - moreso than already occurs with the typical "moderator."
Failing that - and it is hard to imagine how to make a debate less fair - they'll have to do something to mitigate Biden's numerous and significant weaknesses. They'll want the questions well in advance. They'll want earpieces and the ability to talk-to (aka coach) their senile candidate through his fumbling answers. They'll want a less physically demanding setup - maybe sitting, maybe with breaks. They'll want a delay loop and the ability to edit on-the-fly. They'll want the ability to immediately cut to commercial - either to save an embarrassment by Biden or cut off President Trump.
Mostly though, I think they're floating this idea of "fairness" and "unfair advantage" as laying the groundwork for completely backing out of any debates. Biden - the invisible candidate or maybe candidate-by-proxy.
Reading the NY Times makes you stupider. Every time I do it, my brain feels cheap and used.

I mean, holy crap! Two comments in and I've already seen their readers argue that Trump is scared to debate Biden because Biden is sharp as a tack and battle tested whereas Trump is soft because he only gets softball questions all day from a conservative media! Biden can pivot quickly and is on top of all the topics whereas Trump is completely lost without his teleprompter.

The only problem I see with Trump debating Biden is that Trump would come off as taking unfair advantage of the mentally infirm.
I mean if Trump beat him senseless in the debates, Biden could get sympathy.

I figured Biden would try to weasel his way out of the debates. He knows that Trump will just keep throwing out “you’ve been involved in politics for 50 years, and didn’t fix anything, what makes you can fix it now?” everytime Biden opens his mouth.
