Dr. Thomas Sowell has just published "Charter Schools and Their Enemies." He presents actual test scores of students in traditional public schools and charter schools on New York State Education Department's annual English Language Arts test and its Mathematics test. Sowell gives the results of student tests in charter schools such as KIPP, Success Academy, Explore Schools, Uncommon Schools, Achievement First as well as the traditional New York City public schools. On the English Language Arts test, a majority of charter school students, most of whom were black or Hispanic, tested proficient or above. Their achievement ratio was nearly 5 to 1. On the Mathematics test 68 percent of charter schools' 161 grade levels had a majority of students testing proficient. In the traditional public schools, 177 grade levels, just 10 percent had a majority of their student testing proficient.

Our school system is a mess in almost all areas. However in particular the anti-American and anti-white narrative has to stop.

I see this year upcoming as the year of training another “Red Guard” generation. The SPLC, etc., must be salivating.

“whose talents are not yet as obvious”

So THAT’S where “he was just getting his life turned around” and “he was an aspiring rapper/music producer” comes from...

More great writings from Doctors Williams and Sowell. I’ll have to admit, though, I likely qualify as a racist for that statement. Since the death of Milton Friedman, the only truly great economists I can name are black - both of them.

Absolutely.

I always read the readers replies, and one reader bitched because Dr Williams ob-ed was seven paragraphs long. He thinks he should have written it in only one sentence.

We have been fighting the teacher’s unions for forty years.

What battles did we ever win?

What proportion of students are not controlled by them?

Wonder how much the teachers’ unions are in bed with the GED ‘industry’?

Re: Teachers unions and the GED

My children enrolled in community college at the ages of 13, 12, and 13. By **law** they were not permitted to take the GED until the age of 16 ( in one state) and 18 in a state to which we moved.

Not having a GED excluded them from all financial or scholarship aid. They would not have been permitted to matriculate in the community college, either, except a state law loophole allowed the admission of “gifted” children. After **very expensive** IQ testing for each child, they were finally admitted. It took aggressive persistence on my part to navigate the admission process.

Please read my tag line.

Wondering if Dr. Williams has ever done this comparison of schools out in the “flyover country”? Just curious how we might compete with the big city areas. Of course, many places may not have very large numbers of the charter schools as compared to home schooling, but we do have some private schools/charter schools.
