Novavax skyrockets 41% after US government grants $1.6 billion for coronavirus vaccine creation
Business Insider (MSN) ^ | 7 July 20 | Ben Winck

Posted on 07/07/2020 8:31:06 PM PDT by BeauBo

The award is the largest yet from Operation Warp Speed, the White House's plan to rapidly develop and deliver a viable vaccine for the coronavirus pandemic.

Part of the grant will fund a Phase 3 trial starting in the fall, according to a press release. Novavax also plans to use the award for delivering 100 million vaccine doses by the end of the year...

Novavax is among several biotech and pharmaceutical firms racing to introduce the first effective treatment for COVID-19. Moderna, Gilead, Johnson & Johnson, Pfizer, and Merck are just some of the other companies testing their own compounds. Markets are paying close attention, too. Positive trial news from leading candidates has typically lifted the stock market, while negative headlines drive mass selling.

The Operation Warp Speed award isn't Novavax's first from the US government. The Department of Defense granted $60 million to the biotech firm in June to help it produce 10 million doses of its NVX-CoV2373 vaccine in 2020.

Though Novavax is now the biggest beneficiary of the White House's coronavirus treatment plan, it's a late entry to the race. The company began human trials in May, well after rival firms started testing. Preliminary trial results are expected by the end of July, according to Tuesday's release, and Phase 2 trials are slated to begin soon after.

I never get the flu shot and I won’t get this.

Take solace in the fact that some well informed members of Congress did well on that stock.

I had 2K shares and after a very bad broker experience, my acct was taken over by a new guy, who seemed like a total idiot. That was about 3 years ago. The stock was completely moribund, moved 3 cents up or down a day. He pounded me to own 10K shs while everyone was telling me the stock was a zero. That would be $1 MM, though I certainly would not have held it much past 50x. If anywhere near even that.

“Crony capitalism?”

I think that it is really just the Government funding every credible contender, rather than waiting for certain results - throwing money at the problem, to buy time. Some of these bets will pay off, and all would be much cheaper than another lock down.

This company is supposed to get the results of their current phase of testing this month. My guess is that rather than wait for the report to cleaned up and staffed, the Government had folks watching over their shoulders, in the interest of max speed (I mean Warp Speed). Probably just as soon as it looked like the results were heading in the right direction, they turned on the money spigots to start ramping up.

These companies are high risk/high reward bets.

If their experiment is successful, they skyrocket, if not, they tank.

“Operation Warp Speed, the White House’s plan to rapidly develop and deliver”

If it’s “Warp Speed”, I’d hate to see “slow” speed. The Indian government said they want a vaccine ready to be deployed by August 15th.

Moderna Vaccine Timeline

According to the following, Moderna in the U.S.A. is *not* one of the five companies using cell lines derived from human fetuses for a COVID-19 vaccine. The following is interesting, though.
