Being from ND, I might shed some light on this.
It has much to do with ND’s primarily agriculture driven economy during the era these rats were elected. In the 30’s there was problems getting ND’s grain to market, the commie’s stepped in and made some political gains. They were the NPL, later to become the Dem-NPL. Other farm organizations actually had communes. They were successful in getting grain to market, which got them votes.
So it became a generational thing to vote rat. With farms enlarging (fewer farmers), becoming more technical and business like, today’s farmers tend to vote R. The oil economy of ND gave some pretty good jobs, they vote R. Other ventures came in, they vote R.
