Just 50% of Americans plan to get a COVID-19 vaccine. Here’s how to win over the rest

Within days of the first confirmed novel coronavirus case in the United States on 20 January, antivaccine activists were already hinting on Twitter that the virus was a scam—part of a plot to profit from an eventual vaccine.

Nearly half a year later, scientists around the world are rushing to create a COVID-19 vaccine. An approved product is still months, if not years, away and public health agencies have not yet mounted campaigns to promote it. But health communication experts say they need to start to lay the groundwork for acceptance now, because the flood of misinformation from antivaccine activists has surged.

Such activists have “kicked into overdrive,” says Neil Johnson, a physicist at George Washington University who studies the dynamics of antivaccine groups on social networks. He estimates that in recent months, 10% of the Facebook pages run by people asking questions about vaccines have already switched to antivaccine views.

Recent polls have found as few as 50% of people in the United States are committed to receiving a vaccine, with another quarter wavering. Some of the communities most at risk from the virus are also the most leery: Among Black people, who account for nearly one-quarter of U.S. COVID-19 deaths, 40% said they wouldn’t get a vaccine in a mid-May poll by the Associated Press and the University of Chicago. In France, 26% said they wouldn’t get a coronavirus vaccine.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is now working on a plan to boost “vaccine confidence” as part of the federal effort to develop a vaccine, Director Robert Redfield told a Senate committee this week. Advocates urge campaigns that include personal messages and storytelling.

Actually... The vaccine for smallpox was inoculation widely developed during the Napoleonic era, like Polio they vaccinated you by giving you the disease... It disappeared in 1987... And inoculations were first mass produced in 1796, so it took 181 years... But that is a few years in terms of human history.

If you observe attestation papers of men serving during world war 1, many of them will be noted as having an ‘vaccination scar’ from their smallpox vaccination, and I myself have a vaccination scar from receiving the smallpox vaccine in 1967.

“Why was a virus whose fatality rate is comparable to a seasonal flu, hyped to such an extent?”

That, plus a lot of people including me have the first-hand experience of not knowing anyone who’s become seriously ill or died from the virus.

No flu shot for me. . .I can’t do volunteer work in the hospital from November through March. Who knows if it will at all since this corona crisis. If I have to wear a mask, my volunteer days in person at the hospital are over.. A couple of years ago my sister had a friend who was in passing and she asked where she was headed. She said to get a flu shot to which my sister replied, “What are you doing that for”. . .the doctor recommended it was her reply. My sister couldn’t talk her out of it. There was nothing wrong with the gal either. Fast forward. . . .she died from it.

Moving the bar yet again I see.

The original post I was replying to was this one, which said "this virus is doing what all viruses do... It’s weakening and eventually it will peter out and disappear." (I added the emphasis)

But viruses don't all do that. There are some that do; usually ones that kill the host quickly or cause severe symptoms quickly, but don't spread effectively. Many viruses never weaken and never disappear without us intervening with something like a vaccine. Smallpox is one example. Polio is another. Influenza. Pertussis. None of them went away on their own. Because that isn't the one track all viruses are on.

And that is what I replied. But now, you're coming back to a whole different question about whether we can produce a safe and effective vaccine for SARS-CoV-2. Different question entirely, but I'm happy to address it separately.

First, in 1954 you could have said the same thing about polio. The US has never had a safe and effective vaccine for polio. In 1925, you could have said the same thing about pertussis (whooping cough). The US has never had a safe and effective vaccine for pertussis. In 1968, you could have said the same thing about Rubella. In 1947, same for mumps. No vaccines ever developed before.

How are those diseases doing today?

Secondly, SARS-CoV-2 is a positive-sense single-stranded RNA virus. Polio, hepatitis A, and Rubella are all also positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. Those three all have safe and effective vaccines already. Other viruses in that group do not yet have a vaccine, but there's no reason to believe it's impossible to produce one.

In fact, we got very close with SARS in 2003. Multiple vaccine candidates were up to phase 3 trials when funding dried up because SARS-CoV-1 didn't spread very well and caused symptoms too rapidly and too severely to keep people going outside where they could infect others. Same with MERS; we had vaccine candidates going into phase 3 trials when funding dried up.

When SARS-CoV-2 came along, some of those same candidates were tweaked slightly to be effective against this new virus and sent back through trials. The difference is, this one isn't going away, so we have multiple candidates in phase 3 trials right now or about to enter phase 3 trials. All we need is one of those to come out the other side of phase 3 showing that it's safe and effective and we've won.

The other big difference is President Trump. When he launched Operation Warp Speed, he shredded red tape and pushed the developers to move forward more quickly than ever before. Further, he made sure they would produce the vaccines en masse in parallel to phase 3 testing so that if one proves safe and effective, we don't need to wait a year for it to be manufactured and deployed. Because President Trump knows this is how we end this nightmare and all Democrat talking points around it: get people a good vaccine.

If you read this article, it my explain a lot as to how come and why people are being manipulated. With some of it you have to read between the lines. Amongst it is total control which is the name of the game. I am glad you are not one of those who doesn’t just fall for it hook line and sinker. Stay healthy and well my friend.....

The person you were talking to didn’t say anything about cases.

The message of your post goes to everyone here, and is clearly meant in one direction.

The early cowpox vaccine was crude and not nearly as effective as the modern versions. It also wasn’t widely deployed to most parts of the world until the World Health Organization’s effort at smallpox eradication from 1958-1977. That effort wiped smallpox off the face of the Earth in 9 years.

A disease that killed hundreds of millions of people for thousands of years was eradicated from the planet in less than a decade, once we actually got (mostly) everyone vaccinated.

Reading is fundamental. Here are the two quotes in their post:

“They are worried the virus is going away too fast for them to make a vaccine”
“Scientists warn virus may be disappearing too fast for vaccine studies to produce meaningful results”

Both refer to cases.
Neither refers to deaths.
Please read more carefully before replying.

said, "we got very close with SARS in 2003"
IFlu was the name of the SARS Vaccine Chiron corporation put on the market in 2004. Which caused those that took the vaccine have trouble getting oxygen to the body. Any strain of SARS that person is forever at greater risk of infection. It was banned in many countries. It was distributed in Italy and China. The FDA dropped the vaccine company Chrion license to distribute vaccines forcing them to sell the company

Why was a virus whose fatality rate is comparable to a seasonal flu, hyped to such an extent?

Two words. Get Trump!

I will always wonder how it all would have been handled if this wasn’t an election year. Would there be a the current full court press by the MSM on virus news if it wasn’t? Would it be the Democrat issue the it is now? I think not. I predict that a few weeks after the election COVID-19 news will be as visible as Division 3 college football scores. You want the info, you’ll have to search for it.

I’m old. I have never had a flu shot. Never will. Never get sick.

I won’t be getting a KungFlu shot, either.

Do you have a link to this? I wasn’t aware of any SARS vaccine being put on the market. My understanding was that nobody got through phase 3 trials because the money dried up.

I’ve gotten probably a dozen flu shots over the years.

Got one last year.

Never again.

Within a few hours, I was absolutely debilitated, spent the next day in bed, slightly better the day after that. Took several weeks to fully recover.

Never again.
