On Friday afternoon, conservative Twitter "pounced" on CNN reporter Leyla Santiago who told Jake Tapper "kicking off the Independence Day weekend, President Trump will be at Mt. Rushmore where he'll be standing in front of a monument of two slave owners and on land wrestled away from Native Americans, told that be focusing on the effort to, quote, tear down our country's history."
Naturally, CNN wanted to stress to celebrating Americans that they should think first of "historically marginalized groups" in this time of "racial reckoning."
LEYLA SANTIAGO: Fireworks, parades, ceremonies. The celebration of U.S. independence once declared by founding fathers that wrote "All men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." But the very rights being celebrated on Independence Day are the same rights that millions of Americans say they and their ancestors have not been allowed to enjoy.
SANTIAGO (on camera): What does Independence Day mean to you?
JESSE HOLLAND, AUTHOR: I will always be a proud American. But that doesn't mean I don't realize the faults and the flaws that this country has.
SANTIAGO: For historian and author Jesse Holland, that includes the injustice that has led to unrest across the country, the inequalities in communities of color highlighted by a pandemic.
HOLLAND: I think it's fair to sometimes question whether America loves African-Americans as much as we love it.

I was just thinking of that moment before I read your post! Hush, those jets belong to us now.
yep, it’s all selective perpetual outrage. And they continually make hypocrites of themselves the moment they speak.
When things swing around in the Future it will be the Democrats that will blame and attack Blacks for all the destruction
We Dutch were pretty smooth eh?
OK my feels are better now ;-)
They thought they were ripping us off, and in a sense they were, given that it would become a haven for liberals, democrats, and dumb bartenders.
His mother's family were slave owners, a point that the main stream media ignores.
Mary Todd's family owned slaves. Her bothers fought for the Confederacy. Her half-sister was the widow of a Confederate officer. She was given a special pass by Lincoln to stay at the White House with them during the war.
I'm guilty. Peter Minuit is supposed to be my 10th great-grandfather.
Leyla Santiago ancestors were Spanish. That means she has slave owning blood in her body. When I was in Cartagena Columbia we went through the square where the Spanish sold over a million slaves from Africa. The ones that survived the journey, that is.
My father was born in Holland, but I'm supposed to be related to Peter Minuit (10th GGF) on my mother's side. He was actually born in 1580, in Wesel, Kleve, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany.
“Where were all these geniuses a month ago mount Rushmore is been there for decades right now all the sudden?”
Guess I’ll give a shot at answering that. Way I have heard it from the locals in Silver City and having seen it displayed some long years ago, the local Native Americans have been fighting to regain the land whereupon the Mt. Rushmore faces reside, even before the faces were carved.
Ok. They were slave owners, lets just accept that and I am betting their slaves were treated pretty damn well, as many, many slaves were. So just get over it, move on and stop being slaves to a tired narrative but most of all stop being slaves to the marxists who are enslaving you to radicalism.
I may have a different perspective on the slaves. The freed slaves were given the right to stay in the U.S.or return to Africa? which did they choose? Simple question. Did your ancestors choose to stay? After the war many of them did go back, but the majority did not. So, they chose to stay. Don’t blame us. I’m pretty sure the offer still stands.
When this sculpture was being started in 1927, the DEMOCRATS would have been up in arms if Thomas Jefferson was not included. George Washington was un-affiliated with any political party but both Abe Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt (TR) were Republicans.
Understand PLEASE that the designer and sculptor, Gutzon Borglum was offered multiple ideas and locations for this project and it was [probably] an obvious choice for Washington, Jefferson and Lincoln to be there. TR, as a well respected and recent President had no strikes against him but the fact that he owned, managed and lived on a North Dakota ranch in the 1880s, and became an advocate of the interests of the American West after that, made him a popular local choice for inclusion in this project.
Did your ancestors choose to stay?
Proud to say, my ancestors, maternal and paternal, were already here. I doubt any owned slaves, as they were farmers trying to stay alive. Among them were twenty three patriots who fought in the American Revolution.
Earliest record of lineage I can find in north America is 1630.
