FedEx has asked the Washington Redskins to officially change its name, long condemned as an anti-Indigenous slur.
The shipping company has communicated to the NFL team a request that it change its name, FedEx confirmed in a statement to NBC News on Thursday. FedEx owns the naming rights to the Maryland field where the NFL team plays and its chief executive, Fred Smith, owns a minority stake in the team.

If the majority of Native Americans took offense with the name, I could understand this. That said, growing up I always thought that the use of Native American names for teams was honoring their tenacity and fighting spirit - like ‘The Chicago Blackhawks’. Somehow, naming a team ‘The Chicago Accountants’, or ‘The Washington Bureaucrats’, or ‘The Atlanta Cowards’ doesn’t inspire.
Agreed, the NFL, as well as the NBA and NCAA, are to be boycotted by real Americans.
Considering where they play, how ‘bout - The WASHINTON SWAMP.
Who asked FedEx their opinion? Is Karen their new CEO?
I work for FedEx and hopefully Snyder will them to KMA.
Snyder’s meddling in team affairs year after year has amounted to ‘throw it at the wall and see what sticks’. Their W-L record and revolving door in the locker room and head coach’s office speak for themselves. The one good thing he has consistently done as owner has been to tell these triggerflakes to go piss up a rope when they get in high dudgeon over the team name and mascot. His stand is, not now, not ever.
Buy the team and change the name. Estimated value 3.4 billion but Dan Snyder will let them have it for a mere 8 billion.
Thats a favorite local name for them.
FedEx knew the team name when they started doing business with the team. Now they are shocked and appalled....
Who asked FedEx their opinion?
FedEx owns naming rights of the stadium and Fred Smith is part owner of the team.
You are probably correct. Some dark years approaching for the NFL, their BLM game, and lessening profits. Toss in the fact that games this upcoming season might be fan-less because of Covid-19.
The kind of patriotic nationwide economic activity like the cotton trade? The slave trade? Or the kind of economic activity that encouraged the federal government to clear out the ... redskins?
I hope the Redskins ask Federal Express to change THEIR name too as long as we're playing the virtue-this-cancel-that game.
What in hell has happened to FEDEX ?
I hope the Redskins ask Federal Express to change THEIR name too as long as we’re playing the virtue-this-cancel-that game.
Its not that simple.
FedEx paid $205 million for the naming rights of FedEx Field.
When you pay $205 million, you have a say in what happens.
Surprising it took this long for this to come up again given the recent insanity.
Why now? Why not a year ago, 5 years ago, 10 years ago?
Thanks yep I know that, wasn’t actually hoping, just figure of speech, making a point.
Can you say segregation? That is where this is headed
Pamunkey is also spelled Pomonkey. In fact, theres a small town in Maryland near DC called Pomonkey.
I vote for that one.
