Vermonts food scraps ban that starts July 1 is the last step in a multi-year process of reducing waste in landfills.
The Universal Recycling Law was unanimously passed by the state legislature in 2012 in response to the states stagnant recycling rates. According to a 2013 study, an estimated 50% of Vermonters' trash included recyclable or compostable materials, like food scraps and leaf and yard debris.
First, you need to find something to store the food scraps in. Morris recommended a large container with a lid, which can be recycled from something already on hand or bought from a hardware store. She said to empty it at least once a week, getting into the habit of taking it out or driving it to a drop-off site just like you would with normal trash and recycled materials.
There are three basic options for what to do with food scraps, according to Morris: compost them for yourself, hire a company to come pick it up from your home or take them to a drop-off site, like CSWD or Green Mountain Compost.

Same here, we never throw food away, they even eat the salad if it has ranch on it.
My city purchased and delivered two large trash cans on wheels.
One is green for trash, the other is blue for recyclables.
I’ve found the blue one works well for leaves and yard waste since I refuse to waste my time and resources by engaging in a worthless activity like curbside recycling.
Good for you. We never got the blue one and I probably wouldn’t use it for anything other than storage anyway. They neighbors all seem to be in compliance. Looks like it all goes to the same landfill.
This could be fun to watch if the outcome is ever reported. It will take some time so the popcorn eating will have to be paced.
Rats, maggots, stinking houses and cars, flies. Oh boy!
Don’t forget having black bears over running your scrap pile. We already have a black (can I even say that?) bear problem and now these unicorn thinkers come up with this “pie in the sky” panacea. Doomed to failure like every other leftist trope. Welcome to the “Karen” state.
Actually no. Many homes are on septic systems. Disposals on septic systems is a no no.
Kind of hard to compost in an apartment.
They are supporting this. We got a 2 year reprieve because the facility was not up to the task.
Well, I feel right stupid now. Had no idea.
did they mention mice and rats?....
We have a big black bear problem here in Vermont.
And a HUGE problem w/ the politicians in Montpelier.
Only diff is, you can shoot the bear and eat them. Politicians, not so much.
I have a disposal. And am on septic. Our septic guy recommends NOT to use the disposal.
There is no way Vermonters, are going to abide with this ruling.
Authorities said, they are not going to go through peoples trash to see if they are complying.
It’s just like the helmet in law in CT, kids under 18 must wear one; yet there is no fine, or punishment if the law is broken. Most you would get is a scolding. Thas all.
None of this makes sense.
No need. Details sometimes are in the deep weeds.
Get a few chickens- they eat everything.
Actually there is a way. Our son and daughter-in-law composted in a Philly townhouse by using a worm bin. If cared for properly, it is also an efficient way to compost organic matter. The worm castings can be sold or given to relatives who garden. :-)
Yes, of course there are ways to do such things. As to the practicality of having populations do it on a wide scale, we shall see how that goes. As this group (at FR) here shows, many don’t even sort into two streams now. Let’s see how this burden is absorbed by people already burdened by distance, overtaxation, raising families, work ,and just regular life. Maybe you have never been to VT, or have a perspective of life here, it ain’t the “Bob Newhart Show” for the most part.
I’m wondering if any of the state’s pols have a financial interest in that composting company.
Where are the Feebs when ya need them, eh?
FWIW, I can’t see folks in Section 8 housing doing the worm bin thing.
Or are public housing residents exempt from the composting requirement..?
Of course they do. That and being slack jawed, dead eyed, moonbats. This is what happens when you let lesbian “Karens” from out of state, with their trust funds take over the legislature.
