DENVER (AP) John Carlos wants to abolish the rule that bans protests at the Olympics.
The renowned Olympic protester has written a letter with an influential group of American athletes, calling on the IOC to put in place a new policy done in collaboration with athletes from across the globe.
Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their fists on the medals stand at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics to protest racial inequality in the United States. They were sent home for violating rules that ban such protests. Those rules remain in place today, though in the wake of global demonstrations against racial injustice, the IOC has recently expressed willingness to rethink them.
Carlos and Smith risked everything to stand for human rights and what they believed in, and they continue to inspire generation after generation to do the same, the letter said. It is time for the Olympic and Paralympic movement to honor their bravery rather than denounce their actions.
Carlos joined the leadership of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committees athlete advisory council in sending the open letter to the International Olympic and Paralympic committees on Saturday. The letter said the AAC had discussed the issue with the IOCs athlete commission.
This month, with protests stemming from the killing of George Floyd spreading across the U.S., IOC President Thomas Bach said the athlete group would explore different ways opinions could be expressed during the games while still respecting the Olympic spirit.

I guess these two black turds don’t understand what the Olympics is supposed to be all about.
It’s gonna get awfully confusing :)
Good thing I don’t watch.
The boxing I watch. But not for a while.
I still don’t get curling. Should look it up.
Looks like they’re cleaning the ice :)
Will the Olympics organization stand up and protect athletes from say Communist China if they take opportunity to protest against China’s policies and human rights record?
Or is this just a protection against backlash from the Olympics and if the athletes soon disappear to a re-education gulag for 5 years pay it no attention?
That bastard, John Carlos won’t quit.
He is known for one thing only, the fist in the air commie salute. So now, as he fades even farther to black, he campaigns to have the protest rule, made BECAUSE OF HIS SHAMEFUL ACTION, ended.
John Carlos: black skin, black heart, black brain, black blood and black mark on Olympic History.
Yep, a one note symphony.
Cancel the Olympics.
Quick, without looking it up...what event did John Carlos compete in?
In the early years, political expressions were outlawed, it was a contest of individuals under a with national identity only that they paraded under a national banner. Athletes could not be sponsored by a nation, only private funding. This was all contaminated by the Communist countries of the USSR era who did finance their Olympic programs and used international sports programs as part of their foreign policy. Then in 1972 in the Munich Games, the South African team was sent home because of apartheid. The non-government, non-political rules still are in force, but enforcing them is another question.
AND....it’ll happen.
