Before she was a senator, Tammy Duckworth took the congressional seat of the late, great Rep. Henry Hyde. He was my friend and mentor when I successfully ran for public office in the district next to his.

This district was in a solid conservative Republican county in the western suburbs of Chicago. Her win was an upset.

Duckworth was elected on her record as a Purple Heart veteran who lost two legs in Iraq when the helicopter she was in was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade.

As a female, a double amputee, an Asian-American and a decorated veteran, many in the Demoncrat party are pushing her for veep because they view her as politically "safe" and a sympathy-vote getter.

And Biden can safely say he picked a "woman of color" as number two on the ticket.

Senator Hyde was your mentor? Well, from what little I know about him, you must have been impressively smart to be one of his proteges. I don’t know a lot of his life, but I recall a few years before Hyde passed, he did something to make certain Hollywood actors VERY angry.
**
1998, actor Alec Baldwin visits the Conan O’Brian show, and says he wants to ‘stone Henry Hyde to death, then go to his home, and stone Hyde’s wife and children too’.

Alec got a pass on this very violent statement, as he always seems to do. All the Liberals just laughed.

Hyde was my congressman too and basically one of the very good ones. HOWEVER, he caved on the Clinton “assault weapon” ban in 1994 and therefore was instrumental in it’s passage. For that he is NEVER forgiven.
