JUNEAU, Alaska - Petitioners have called for the removal of a statue in Alaska of the U.S. cabinet secretary who arranged the purchase of the state’s land from Russia.

The Juneau Empire reports Jennifer LaRoe launched the Change.org petition to remove the William H. Seward statue that drew signatures from 1,300 people.

The $250,000 statue unveiled in 2017 shows Seward holding the 1867 Treaty of Cession authorizing the Alaska Territory sale to the U.S. from the Russian Empire.

LaRoe acknowledged Seward's role as an abolitionist in President Abraham Lincoln’s administration but says the statue is a symbol of white, patriarchal authority and the disenfranchisement of Alaska Natives.

Any Alaskan who feels that the US purchase of Alaska was a bad thing is free to paddle his kayak over to Russia. I am certain they will be welcomed with open arms.

If we become a One-Party State under the Democrats, Russia might not look so bad.

Cant we just make old statutes (50 or 100 year old) ‘historical’ and federally protected?

We can make an ugly looking brick building ‘historical’, why can’t we do the same with statues??.

If they were federal they would be protected...

Yup. Most people don’t know that. Union states were the last strongholds of slavery (’holding them in bondage where can set them free’).

They were emancipated in the southern states (’emancipating slaves were we can’t reach them’), to disrupt logistics in the war and cause rebellion.

So go and destroy all Union monuments too. /s (no don’t!)

to disrupt logistics in the war and cause rebellion.

And did neither.

Tell it to the Tsar... after all he’s the one that sold you.

Apparently the fact that you ACTIVELY WORKED TO END SLAVERY is no longer enough.

But let us be precise and accurate on this point. Seward actively worked to pass the Corwin Amendment, which would have made slavery permanent had enough states ratified it.

So he was working to preserve it before he was working against it.

Because if you are not moving the goalposts you are not a leftist.

We need a chang.org petition to remove Jennifer LaRoe from Earth. She’s lowering the already precarious IQ of the planet’s inhabitants.

I came from a traditional Southern home. Seward was always seen as a hero for purchasing Alaska amid the chorus of hoots and jeers. The Cold War strongly reinforced the feeling that having no foreign power on the continent was a good idea.

Any imbecile can create a ‘petition’

Submitting a petition with required signatures is a whole NUTHER thing ...

I’m sure there would be some Leftist professor who would sign a petition making Karl Marx the State God of Alaska ....

I’m sure a deal can be worked out with the Russians to give all the complainers the Russian citizenship they would have had without Seward, once we revoke their American citizenship naturally. This is just one more piece of evidence among many that these radicals are trying to bring down the United States a lot more than just a bunch of old statues. And they make no distinctions between Union and Confederate, so long as it’s a statue of a Caucasian of accomplishment who represents important parts of US history (or more broadly that of Western Civilization, which they also hate).
