JUNEAU, Alaska - Petitioners have called for the removal of a statue in Alaska of the U.S. cabinet secretary who arranged the purchase of the state’s land from Russia.

The Juneau Empire reports Jennifer LaRoe launched the Change.org petition to remove the William H. Seward statue that drew signatures from 1,300 people.

The $250,000 statue unveiled in 2017 shows Seward holding the 1867 Treaty of Cession authorizing the Alaska Territory sale to the U.S. from the Russian Empire.

LaRoe acknowledged Seward's role as an abolitionist in President Abraham Lincoln’s administration but says the statue is a symbol of white, patriarchal authority and the disenfranchisement of Alaska Natives.

Suuuure, replace it with one of the gullible Russian Tsar who sold Alaska.

I don't think he was gullible so much as he realized he had no way to defend it if the British decided to take it as he thought they were planning. He would rather have the "weak" Americans owning it that the world spanning British Empire, to whom the Russians had recently lost the Crimean War.

What we are witnessing is a hybrid form of mental retardation afflicting society as a whole that is egged on by social media and shady activist groups.

Propaganda and myths are re-inforced daily/hourly in institutions of higher learning nationwide and even festers in the halls of CONGRE$$ and our very own courts of justice&equality.

Needless to say, a media full of talking heads and journolists never miss an opportunity to bang the drums for the Progre$$ive and anti-American agenda.

Those who can see thru all the BS, will have to make a choice in November. It may well be their last chance to slow much less turn the tide of Red that threatens this planet like never before.

jmho

The American Taliban can use howitzers on Mt. Rushmore like the Afghan Taliban did on the rock carvings there.

But look at it this way. When they blast off Lincoln, it will make room for Reagan and Trump.

If citizens follow the laws I don’t care what statues are removed.

If a company buys a property and has an old structure taken down so they can build a larger more modern building - that’s NOT THE SAME AS THUGS BURNING BUILDINGS DOWN IN AS A ACTS OF CRIMINAL LAWLESSNESS.

Yes, there’s a difference between mobs destroying property and a city choosing to take down a statue they no longer want.

Any Alaskan who feels that the US purchase of Alaska was a bad thing is free to paddle his kayak over to Russia. I am certain they will be welcomed with open arms.

Apparently the fact that you ACTIVELY WORKED TO END SLAVERY is no longer enough.

Attacked and almost murdered by Lewis Powell on April 14, 1864. His house is in Auburn, New York and he is buried in Fort Hill Cemetery there.

Rather than build a statue of their own, they insist on tearing down statues of others. Rather than celebrate their own, they must insist that others NOT celebrate. Cancel Culture is ALWAYS negative. It NEVER builds, only destroys.

Building is not their goal. Greatness is not their goal. Freedom is not their goal.
