For the purpose of tracking down the lost tribes of Israel, I would assume one would attempt to retrieve the closest sample of DNA, prior to the branching, as possible. Perhaps the bones of Jacob, if they could be located, would provide the perfect sample if they are not too dried out. And then there may be other means of determining the gene pool. But yes, even I could be a decedent of one of the sons of Jacob, like millions of others.
Also, a number of Jeremiah's prophecies have yet to be fulfilled in their entirety:

Could that be why Jesus said that salvation “would come from the Jews “, which would mean that the gentles would welcome in?
Yes, that’s why they were never “lost:
No, He meant that God works in covenants
First with a man and woman. Adam and Eve
Then a family, Noah
Then a clan, Abraham
Then a tribe, Jacob, a nation
Then a kingdom, Israel
Then through Israel to the whole of humanity
All of Jeremiah prophecy are fulfilled. What you quoted is a prophecy of Jesus
That’s not about today!! It’s about the return from Babylonian exile in 536 BC.
I confess ignorance on Jerimiah, but the trend is not a shocker. Jews are under assault across much of Europe as Muslim refugees and immigrants lash out. In USA hate crimes against Jews far exceed those against other minorities. Israel remains a beacon of safety for all Jews, at least until Iran get the bomb.
The Righteous Branch

Jeremiah 23 is where God is reproving the evil governors of His land and promises that Christ will be the prince of shepherds who will destroy the false prophets of the period 600 BC to 33 AD
23:1 to 2 is about how the Babylonians were able to cart away the Judeans.
3 is about the return from the Babylonian exile.
