Back when I was a semi-serious runner one of my goals in racing was to catch or beat the first woman. I knew that she’d be a darned fine athlete, and I’d have a respectable finish.

In my second five mile race ever, that had not yet dawned on me. With less than a mile to go I found myself closing on a young girl, high school age, and overheard a spectator say “there’s the first woman”. I closed to within a yard or so with a couple of hundred yards to go, and sneaked a peek behind me. There was no one close enough to catch me, so instead of blowing by her in the final stretch I became her cheerleader. Felt good about it. But never did it again!

Anyone else remember that Riggs was playing the doubles court while King played the singles court? King was younger, but better?

It didn't do too well.

Maybe the next show will have lopadicoffamy example that will do better against a REAL female.
