The San Francisco Unified School District is moving toward renaming some schools in the city amid a moment of national reckoning on race and history.
From the toppling of statues honoring controversial figures who were tied to slavery in Golden Gate Park this weekend to a push to rename Sir Francis Drake Boulevard in Marin County, the Bay Area is changing its views on honoring controversial figures of the past.
*** The Black Lives Matter movement that has erupted in recent weeks following the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis has amplified a push to rename schools in the Bay Area and across the country.
Last week the Berkeley Unified School District decided to move forward in renaming Jefferson and Washington elementary schools that commemorate the first and third U.S. presidents, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson, who both owned slaves. Now the San Francisco Unified School District is looking to follow suit.
*** Schools that are under the spotlight include Francis Scott Key Elementary in the Sunset District, named after the man who wrote the lyrics of the Star Spangled Banner, also a known slave owner.
Another school that may see a name change is Junipero Serra Elementary in Bernal Heights. Serra was an 18th century Franciscan friar who served as the architect of the California mission system during the era of Spanish colonization. The missions were designed to convert the indigenous population to Catholicism by confining them to missions throughout California. Natives who tried to escape were beaten and captured, as indigenous customs were banned.
Other schools under the spotlight in San Francisco include Washington High School and John Muir Elementary, which may be renamed for the poet and San Francisco native Maya Angelou.

George never did like San Francisco, so maybe the feeling is mutual.
BLM = Big Lie Machine = Black Liberation Marxists
The guy responsible for getting T.Roosevelt to begin the National Park system is out, and a Black female Dr.Seuss is in.
Why not just name them what they are?
Indoctrination Center 1, Indoctrination Center 2, etc
Welcome to Step ‘N Fetchit Elementary
I say rename ALL of them. Rip every politicians name off of every school, street sign, building, etc.
Only a select few deserve it! Most have been parasites!
Muir wrote some disparaging things about Natives.
John Muir? I thought he was a hero to the environmentalists.
Target #1
Target #2
Target #3
Target #4
I cannot believe that they will let Galileo remain as a school name.
I’ve got an idea. Why not name them after a group that
kills Blacks, loots, then burns their businesses and
communities to the ground.
That’s what Birmingham did. They named a street after these
terrorists.
That bastard!
This is pathetic.
Name them “Setting Your Kids Up To Fail The Rest Of Their Lives But At Least They’ll Feel Superior When Doing It High School.”
Still trying to figure out what John Muir did wrong.
= = =
He put his foot prints on the Sierras.
Untold millions/billions of endangered bacteria dies.
His alleged support of nature was a cover for Marxist destruction.
And that name: Muir, definitely a plagerism of David Muir ABC.
1. Poop on Sidewalk Elementary
2. Addict Used Needle Elementary
3. Idiot Liberals Ruin Everything Elementary
4. White Hetero Males Must Die Elementary
May I suggest: Tupac Skakur Elementary School, Notorious B.I.G. Elementary School, Louis Farrakhan High School, Mumia Abu Jamal School of Advanced Studies.
Best idea so far, for the lousy degenerates doing this.
Will Ho Chi Minh School or Eldridge Cleaver High (really high, often) or Huey P. Newton Elementary? And can they honor news shills? Walter Cronkite Socialist Academy or Wolf Blitzer Middle School? *
*Oops! Forgot. No whites allowed except for paying taxes at home.
If Washington, Jefferson, Francis Scott Key and Junipero Serra were alive today, they would be embarrassed to find San Francisco schools named after them.
