Its great for the Dreamers in the short term, but a long-term loser for the rule of law and for immigration reform: Thats the bottom line of the Supreme Courts ruling Thursday on President Trumps move to rescind his predecessors Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals executive order.
Some 700,000 immigrants brought to America illegally by their parents, who registered under DACA, can heave a sigh of relief: They can continue working and living without fear of deportation. That was plainly Chief Justice John Roberts intent but rulings are supposed to be about law, not desired results.
Roberts, joined by the courts four liberals, makes much to-do about how Team Trump failed to jump through various procedural hoops before canceling President Barack Obamas order but those are hoops that Obama also didnt jump through before issuing it.
Obama had tried and failed to get Congress to set up a program to protect such children (and other illegal immigrants as well). So he simply ignored the legislative branch and set up the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, letting immigrant kids apply for temporary status that not only shields them from deportation but grants legal rights to work, attend college and so on.
Hed previously noted time and again that he lacked the power to do that, saying that laws on the books already make very clear how to enforce the immigration system, and for me to simply through executive order ignore those congressional mandates would not conform with my appropriate role as president.
He went ahead with DACA anyway.

Hanging judges.
Didn’t DACA expire?
This is so easy, even a caveman can do it...
If the pubs manage to retake the house, start impeaching judges..
The house has the power to do this, and they should make it a top priority...
Just like the ad says, “Just do it”..
SCOTUS has been at this “super-legislature” game since the 1930’s.
They’ve built a marvelous house of cards. Our legal system is a sham, nonsense on stilts.
Where is it said that the President or Congress has to abide by any Supreme Court Dictate?
letting immigrant kids apply for temporary status
Well said!
Roberts has been compromise.
Trump needs to sign an EO that says the Feds won’t prosecute anyone for weapon violations unless used in a violent crime. That gives us legal standing for anything that comes down the pike now.
Hey, give John Roberts a break.
Menopause is tough.
AND the Constitution.
Didn’t Roberts and the Bolshies rule that Executive Orders overrule the Legislative?
I don’t know how Roberts can show his face in public. I really don’t. At this stage, he’d resign at once if he had the slightest decency left in him.
Very good point. The president has a responsibility to we the people, not we the judges.
If theres one thing weve learned in the last three years its that the Trump administration sucks at administrative law.
Pffft that wimp couldn’t handle menopause.
Given the recent state of the Union, its compass, and after decades long angst, it is clear that our governing principles no longer pertain. That this state of affairs, and its continuance, are now well beyond recall is clear.
However, as a possible alternative, consider: Linked to the 22nd Amendment (from 1951) of the Constitution of the United States of America. Therein is stated that a term-limit for an elected President of the United States of America is two terms - eight years - maximum.
Proposed:
US Senator - (a) Each term is four years, (b) Maximum is two terms (eight years), same for staff.
US Representative - (a) Each term is two years, (b) Maximum of three terms (six years), same for staff.
No Federal Judge will ever have a life-time appointment.
Similarly, staffs of all Federal Law Enforcement agencies will have "rif" mandates.
....
Oversight - as a verb, yielding results; not as we have it now - noun (watching paint dry).
DEEDS not WORDS!!!
Roberts, joined by the courts four liberals, makes much to-do about how Team Trump failed to jump through various procedural hoops before canceling President Barack Obamas order but those are hoops that Obama also didnt jump through before issuing it.
Did the GOP sue him and take it to SCOTUS? Probably not, the GOP is worthless.
