U.S. fighter jets intercepted eight Russian warplanes near Alaska in two separate incidents, according to military officials on Wednesday.

“NORAD F-22 Raptors, supported by KC-135 Stratotankers and an E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System, successfully completed two intercepts of Russian bomber aircraft formations entering the Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zone last night,” the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) wrote on Wednesday morning.

The head of NORAD, Gen. Terrence J. O’Shaughnessy said that with the latest incident, Russian planes “have penetrated our Canadian or Alaskan Air Defense Identification Zones” for the eighth time so far in 2020.

“Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, NORAD constantly monitors the northern approaches to our nations and our operations make it clear that we will conduct homeland defense efforts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year,” the general said in a written statement.

Military officials told the Washington Times that two Tu-95 bombers, two Su-35 fighter jets, and an A-50 airborne control aircraft were first intercepted. A second formation included two Tu-95 bombers and an A-50.

They got as close as 32 nautical miles from the coast of Alaska, said officials. The planes, however, didn’t breach American airspace.

The Russian Ministry of Defense posted a video online of their planes taking the planned flight before they were intercepted by the U.S. fighter jets.

The ministry confirmed the U.S. intercept of its aircraft.

Little and big diomede islands are only 2 miles apart. The bigger island belongs to Russia.

This looks a lot like the article that was here on FR more than a week ago, photos and all. Let’s not hype the Russians any more than they deserve.

Exactly. While they don't exactly give us a heads up, both sides are professional about it. Note that WE do the same thing off the coast of Russia. Note we also conduct Armor and Infantry maneuvers near Russia's land borders, something they cannot do to the USA.

I heard the alert birds launch. Hard to miss a max performance launch. The -135 tanker was a bit of a surprise, the AKLRR systems much have seen the incoming ‘train’.

This stuff has been going on for decades.

I’m surprised that the Russians
had enough fuel
any working aircraft
pilots sober enough to drive....
