ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - A protester was shot at Tiguex Park Monday evening during a demonstration that called for the removal of a Juan de Oñate statue, "La Jornada", outside the Albuquerque Museum.

The injured man has been transported to the hospital for treatment. He is listed in critical but stable condition.

Moments before protesters were about to remove the statue with a chain, a struggle broke out among the crowd.

Video footage shows the protesters directing their attention toward a man brandishing a gun.

"Get his license plate," screamed one protester in the video. "Follow him."

A group of protesters pulled the subject to the ground. After a few seconds of struggle, the subject shot his gun four times.

Police officers in riot gear arrived shortly afterwards.

A number of members with the New Mexico Civil Guard, a self-described militia, were seen being arrested along with the subject who fired at the protesters.

Law enforcement deployed tear gas and non-lethal projectiles to try to push back the group of protesters.

Protesters continued to try to pull down the statue of Oñate while others attempted to let air out of the tires of police transport vans.

At around 9:20 p.m., the crowd began to disperse—leaving the statue intact.

An investigation is currently underway.

Mayor Tim Keller sent the following statement after Monday's shooting:

“The shooting tonight was a tragic, outrageous and unacceptable act of violence and it has no place in our city. Our diverse community will not be deterred by acts meant to divide or silence us. Our hearts go out the victim, his family and witnesses whose lives were needlessly threatened tonight. This sculpture has now become an urgent matter of public safety. In order to contain the public safety risk, the City will be removing the statue until the appropriate civic institutions can determine next steps.”

The governor's office also sent a statement about the incident:

“Although we are still learning more about the situation, I am horrified and disgusted beyond words by the reports of violence at a protest Monday night in Albuquerque. The heavily armed individuals who flaunted themselves at the protest, calling themselves a “civil guard,” were there for one reason: To menace protesters, to present an unsanctioned show of unregulated force. To menace the people of New Mexico with weaponry – with an implicit threat of violence – is on its face unacceptable; that violence did indeed occur is unspeakable.

“I am monitoring the situation; my administration is in touch with local officials; the individual who was injured is in my prayers, and I am thinking of their family and friends.

“Let me clear: There is absolutely no space in New Mexico for any violent would-be ‘militia’ seeking to terrorize New Mexicans; and there is no space for violence of any kind on our streets and in our communities, or for any sort of escalation of reckless, violent rhetoric, no matter who strikes first. The instigators this evening will be rooted out, they will be investigated, and they will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law.”

Not the first time that there has been radicals upset about Oñate Statues in New Mexico, but this is certainly the most stupid episode so far.

I never heard of the "New Mexico Civil Guard" before, (although admittedly 'I don't get out much anymore' and most of the NM news I hear is via the NM ping list here). Wouldn't be surprised if it was some sort of false flag operation to give Governorlissima Lujan an excuse to crack down on 'patriots'.

The governor is a full blown leftist revolutionist and his vile bigoted speech about “diversity” sickens me.

Looked like self defense. No idea what caused him to draw his gun in the middle of a mob, or if that was justified, but at the end there were several people on him, and he didn’t have much choice. Attacking a man with a gun is never a good idea.

I hope the injured person is one of the attackers, and not a bystander.

Protests against Anglos, Columbus (Italian), now against Spanish historical figures. What’s next? French? Portuguese? Vikings?

Hmmm. Haven’t statue removers been declared safe from ass-salt by anyone that disagrees with them?

The shooting was as clear an example of lawful self-defense as I have ever seen.

Onate called the last Conquistador, had a most interesting background and personal life:

Oñate was born in 1550, at Zacatecas in New Spain (colonial México) to a family of Spanish-Basque colonists and silver mine owners. His father was the conquistador and silver baron Cristóbal de Oñate, a descendant of the noble house of Haro. His mother was Doña Catalina Salazar y de la Cadena.[7] His ancestor Cadena fought in the 1212 Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa in Al-Andalus, and was the first to break through the line of defense protecting Mohammad Ben Yacub. The family was granted another coat of arms, and thereafter were known as “Cadenas”.[8]

Juan de Oñate married Isabel de Tolosa Cortés de Moctezuma, granddaughter of Hernán Cortés, the conqueror of the Triple Alliance, and the great-granddaughter of the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma Xocoyotzin.[9

That's racist, tearing down statues of Barack 0bama's cousin, just because he's related to every former President of the United States!

The mob knows if it can be destructive, aggressive, and demanding enough, pathetic Dem politicians will give them their every desire. They’ll be allowed to destroy historical artifacts and attack people and businesses to their heart’s content and still be called “peaceful protestors.”

The left would love to provoke a reaction that is even 1/25 as violent and destructive as what their side has done, so they can have an excuse to really start to crack down on the populace hardcore and to keep them frightened of the lawlessness and too intimidated by both the government and Democrat-backed mobs to stand up for themselves.

Take a note folks, the leftist mobs are going crazy destroying history, something that usually only happens when a country is conquered by a foreign army or within from an insurrection designed to obliterate the current country.

I’m so confused... no police in favor of community policing... except when the community chooses to police themselves, then it is menacing or harassing...

The left has already decided some people’s lives matter far more than other people’s lives. They’ve made that clear over and over. Self-defense is no longer a justification for anyone whom the left has already dehumanized.

At first he was backing up, gun down and removing himself from the situation. Then they came for him and he started running away.

Surrounded, one hitting him with a skateboard, another(?) or the skateboard guy yelling “I’m going to kill you!”

If I was on that jury it would be a reasonable case of self-defense. Of course in this day and age, that guy is going to have a long road in front of him.

Self defense is right. Watch it frame by frame, blue shirt shooter gets clocked by skateboard then the mobs jumps him, just prior to the shoot.
