Atlanta police shot and killed a black man late Friday night following a struggle outside a Wendy’s restaurant on the city’s southside, in an incident that inflamed tensions over police use of force and racial injustice that have roiled Atlanta and cities across the nation since the Memorial Day death of George Floyd at the hands of police in Minneapolis.
Video of the shooting of 27-year-old Rayshard Brooks, who had allegedly fallen asleep in his car and blocked the restaurant’s drive-through, went viral across social media. Protesters marching for a third weekend in Atlanta for justice for Floyd and other black men and women killed by police quickly demanded a full investigation Saturday of the Brooks shooting, and the Georgia NAACP called for the termination of Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields.

It was the reason for the cops to be called. It was the reason he was being arrested for failing a field sobriety test.
What happened after that was a result of his deciding to violently resist arrest.

It’s always easy after a crisis to Monday Morning Quarterback and go in and say that you should have done this or that none of you Monday morning quarterbacks of the police acknowledge one thing during a crisis police lives and other lives surrounding are at stake.

In my day (1970s-1980s) here's how cops handled this -- and it happened a LOT:
1) "Sobriety test" = smell the sleeping dude, who wreaks of booze
2) Take his keys out of the ignition
3) Let him sleep it off
4) Talk to him when he rouses, tow the car, drive him home if req'd
5) If he runs away, who cares? You have his car, and know where he lives.
Nope...they should be shot, of course.
Are you serious? They had his CAR, and thus also know his address. What's the rush? Where's he gonna go? Eventually the law will catch up with him.

Rarely does someone who is drunk act rationally. Drunks ALWAYS escalate a situation. ALWAYS. And once they fight with police, or anyone, adrenaline mixes with the booze and bad things happen.
I’m pretty sure your Saint Rayshard was well known by Atlanta police. Why do I say that? Again the perspective, and experience, of reality.

We should remember and be careful when we reply sometimes because there are “tares among the wheat” and “wolves in sheep’s clothing” and so on.
