Americans rushed to snatch up physical copies of the movie Gone With the Wind after HBO Max announced it was blacklisting the film from its streaming platform.
The film was the number one bestselling film on Amazon early Wednesday morning, even though both DVDs and Blu-ray discs were sold out.
An HBO Max spokesman said Tuesday the film was pulled because of ethnic and racial prejudices that were counter to WarnerMedias values.
Black actress Hattie Daniel won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar of 1940 for her performance in the epic, the first black actor or actress to win an Oscar.

I ended my family’s subscription to HBO this morning. The only thing I did like about it was the family filter that made it easy to find things we could watch with the children.
All of cable, not just HBO. The monthly fees are shared by all the networks.
Kill your television.
To what extent is amazon already enforcing thought control? I’d be interested to know.
I have a digital copy. DVDs take up space. Hollywood can try to take it from me, but I have a backup (with the copy protection removed). You can do that as long as you don't distribute or sell.
Theyll probably get more people to watch it by doing this than have watched it in a long time. I watched it a while ago when my husband was out of town a while ago, obviously before CoVid. Its always been one of my favorite movies (and books), but darn if it isnt LONG! Longer than The Ten Commandments! Ill probably have to get a digital copy since I refuse to pay $100 for a DVD or a Blu Ray copy.
Has anyone called for burning the paper copies yet?
That is excellent news. People need to buy hard copies of their favorite movies now just incase.
Dont know, but I guess I ought to go out and get a copy of that! It is truly a classic! I probably borrowed the copy that I read in high school.
I decided Id better go buy a hardbound copy before those disappear too. I have a thing for good old-fashioned real books, especially classics. Books were my first love. I learned to read before I got into school, probably because I had older siblings and wanted to keep up with them so badly. I should have this copy by next week!
HBO be rayciss. They dissin Mix Hattie. No residuals for her estate.
This and Roots are 2 if my favorite classics. Alex Haley did a good job with the book. Movie was good but missing some as many movies do.
Bet you wouldn’t be able to find that mini-series anywhere now either.
As soon as I saw that it had been pulled, I went to Ebay and bought a dvd. I knew this was coming.
Should probably stock up on the Dukes of Hazzard, Walker Texas Ranger, and All in the Family, too.
It’s a film where whites are dumb and racist, but are saved by a black, whom they were initially prejudiced against, thus learning a lesson.
The price on ebay is nuts.
I remember when “I read banned books” was a popular bumper sticker, usually seen plastered all over battered rusted out Volvos and VW Beetles, right along with “QUESTION AUTHORITY”. Ironic isn’t it?
