Commentators reacted with shock and disgust to President Donald Trumps conspiracy theory that a 75-year-old man who was attacked and hospitalized by police last week could be an ANTIFA provocateur.
Two Buffalo police officers were charged with felony assault for shoving longtime activist Martin Gugino to the ground outside City Hall, resulting in Gugino hitting his head and bleeding from his ear. Gugino remains hospitalized, in serious but stable condition, according to his lawyer.

Buffalo protester shoved by Police could be an ANTIFA provocateur. 75 year old Martin Gugino was pushed away after appearing to scan police communications in order to black out the equipment. @OANN I watched, he fell harder than was pushed. Was aiming scanner. Could be a set up?
Guginos lawyer responded to Trumps tweet, asking why the President of the United States would make such dark, dangerous, and untrue accusations against him.
Commentators and journalists from both the left and right soon reacted as well with disbelief.
Peter J. Hasson
If he were trying to lose in November, what would he be doing differently?
There was blood leaking from his head. It is visible on the video. He is still in the hospital, noted NBC News correspondent Heidi Przybyla, while CNNs Chris Cillizza questioned, A 75 year old dude? Who started bleeding from his ear?
Chris Cillizza
President Trumps old friend Piers Morgan also weighed in on the comment, tweeting, Shame on you, Mr Trump, as Fox News contributor and former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer declared, The Presidents penchant for trafficking in conspiracy theories is, politically speaking, going to ruin him. This is reckless. He doesnt know when to stop.
Piers Morgan
BREAKING: President of the United States spreads insane conspiracy theory nonsense to falsely smear 75-yr-old man brutalised by police & still in serious condition in hospital. Shame on you, Mr Trump.

Not taking the bait of Trump's tweets is generally good policy, but this is so despicable and sinister it merits an exception.

Broken record playing again -- this man has serious mental health issues which we are ignoring as a country. This is well beyond playing partisan politics. He is living in a sick and twisted alternative universe. He's probably hearing voices at this point. But lets all ignore it
Bill Kristol
The president of the United States flat out defending police brutality--and not with the usual, "the police are under huge pressure, they've got to make split-second judgment calls" type of excuses, but with unabashed blaming-the-victim conspiracy theories.

this is beyond deranged
James Surowiecki
This is unbelievable in so many ways, including the fact that Trump for some reason thought it was smart to mention Gugino's age, just so we were all clear he's defending cops who shoved a 75-year-old to the sidewalk.

Here's the absolutely insane OAN report that Trump is referencing: "The latest tensions in the Buffalo police department could be the result of a false flag provocation by far left group antifa"
Ben Collins
The OAN conspiracy theory the president is livetweeting here was reported by an ex-Sputnik (Russian state media) reporter, who last month claimed coronavirus was a cover by George Soros, Bill Gates, Dr. Fauci, the Clintons and China for "population control."
David Frum
When this line of argument fails, Trump will retreat to his classic all-purpose excuse: "It was Obama who shoved the 75 year old man to the sidewalk and cracked his head."
Deranged? Ever look in the mirror assholes? This is typical leftist posturing.
The Washington Post reported on Saturday that Gugino is a member of two nonprofits: PUSH Buffalo, which focuses on affordable housing, and Western New York Peace Center, a human rights organization, and is also part of the Catholic Worker Movement.
“. . . man ATTACKED by police . . ..”
Yep. Brutal and vicious attack, indeed.
In that picture it looks like hes photographing balls.

And he was not attacked by police.
He started messing with the police mans belt, close to his pistol, got shoved off, and jumped back like a Spanish forward faking a foul by a German midfielder. Completely fake.
And knocked his own head on concrete.
Theres ample video of the fakery.
Why would I read anything from the times?
Sorry.
It would have been wall to wall Floyd if not for Trump’s tweet. And the media freakout is gold.
Sciutto: Sometimes on this broadcast we will call out false outrages statements...egregious claims without basis...video is disturbing...police lied.
Poppy: Taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Harwood: This tweet from the President is deranged... completely disconnected from reality... on OAN, a nutty outlet, presented by a Russian... by Sputnik, a Russian proganda network... in 2016 Trump welcomed help from Russia... doing precisely again.
Abby: Always been a pedaler of conspiracy theories... he created a conspiracy theory, the birther movement... he gets conspiracies from all kinds of sources... no succesful effort to keep this kind of information from the President... part of a pattern... he sees nothing wrong with horrorfying video.

#MartinGugino has been a mainstay in the peace & justice movement for decades. Many in #Buffalo have attended countless demonstrations with him. Never once has he exhibited “provocateur” tendencies.
@realDonaldTrump is spreading misinformation to move his own (racist) agenda.

He made a conditional statement. He didn’t assert it was the case.
he was using his phone to scan the police radio frequencies in order for his antifa buddies to monitor the police bans. Also, where are the pics of his actual injuries, other than the fake blood coming out of the tube under his mask into his ear......where are the stitches in his head? No pics....
But there is a video of him yapping about it and the other protesters telling him that if he does it, he’s gonna get knocked on his ass.

3 Jun: World Economic Forum: The Great Re-Set: Why LGBT+ inclusion is the secret to cities’ post-pandemic success
The analysis by Open For Business, a coalition of companies advancing LGBT+ equality, shows a strong positive correlation (0.67) between how resilient an economy is and how accepting it is of LGBT+ people (see the chart below). This is a significant finding: a one-point increase in social acceptance suggests a three-point increase in that economys economic resilience index, even when controlling for GDP per capita. Could LGBT+ inclusion be a secret ingredient for economic resilience?...
The connection between resilience and inclusion is widely accepted by policy-makers. The World Bank describes inclusive communities as a key dimension of sustainable, resilient cities. The OECD identifies inclusive society as a driver of resilience in a city. The IMF contends that an economy is more fragile and less resilient when it is not inclusive. A report by UN Habitat finds that inclusion is required for a successful urban resilience agenda.
Now is the time to be embracing LGBT+ communities, not stigmatizing them. Creating inclusive societies isnt just the right thing to do; as the evidence shows, its an important part of an economic strategy focused on resilience and recovery.
