Amid winds of change as America confronts its race issue, a reparations resolution dismissed by many as the stuff of dreams was unanimously passed by a Chicago City Council committee Friday and is scheduled to go before the full council June 17.
The resolution would establish a “Chicago Citizens of African Descent Reparations Commission” to investigate how one of the most segregated cities in the nation could best make amends for the impact of slavery.
Up for discussion by the Committee on Human Relations Thursday, black and Latino aldermen called the resolution timely and necessary, in the aftermath of the cellphone-recorded killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis and protests that grew violent as they unfurled across the nation, triggering a collective discourse over institutional racism.
In November, the city of Evanston made history with groundbreaking legislation establishing a $10 million reparations fund to make amends to that north suburb’s black population for historic wrongs traced to racial inequities — through a cannabis sales tax.
“Today is a great day for the city of Chicago and the nation. The committee voted to address the lingering impact of injustice, cruelty, brutality and inhumanity of the Transatlantic Slave Trade on descendants of slavery,” said Willie Wilson, the former mayoral candidate and influential businessman who has funded reparations efforts in Chicago and Springfield.

I presume they think they can offer reparations, and just increase the money they get from the Federal Government to offset it.

would seem to have made reparations back during the Civil War when it changed its laws to allow Negroes to enter the state. All blacks in Illinois got their of their own free will and volition.

You are right. My ancestors didn’t arrive in America until well after slavery was abolished so there is no way I am responsible for the past. And I doubt very much that most blacks are descended from those same slaves brought here. If they want money, go after Obama since his family was involved in selling slaves; or get a f’n job! By the way, the first slave owner was a black man!

And now we know what all of this has been about all along....Reparations.
Well, what took them so long? They ginned up the riots, destroyed buildings, burnt them down, stole merchandise, killed people, and it took them 2 weeks to call for reparations? It was on the menu from the start.

Yes, but reparations should consist of school vouchers, which a recipient can use at any private, parochial, church, or home school, provided that the tuition per pupil is less than half the expenses per pupil of Chicago public school. Chicago public schools will see their budget reduced accordingly through layoffs and closures of failing and violent schools.
Alternatively, reparations for criminal adults should consist of room and board at state prison upon conviction. Chicago must start arresting anti-black criminals and turning them to the county for trial and conviction and thence to the state for removal during long terms or life terms at state penitentiary. The city of Chicago will save enormously on medical expenses and property repair that the incarcerated cease to inflict on city persons and property. Some upstanding black Chicagoans even can get good jobs with the city police under this plan.
Neither measure of course can inflict racial discrimination, so all citizens of the United States of America of appropriate age and character will be eligible for these “reparations” programs.
I penciled out reparations, as represented in unpaid wages. this is what I came up with:
At a rate of 1.5M slaves (2M total minus 500K freemen)
x $120/yr wages (2 meals free board) (child wages were 1/2 adult wages but I went with adult wages for farm laborer at 1850 rates which was higher than 1750 rates)
= $180M x 20 years expected labor based on life expectancy of 35-37yrs (1700-1870), also adjusts for nonworking time of youth/injury/disease/old age)
= $3.6B
interest rates from 1750-1865 were relatively stable at around 3%
= 5.4M/yr x 20 yrs
= $108M + $3.6B
= $3.7B
= $3.7Bx10 (20 years x 10 = 200 yrs - 1660-1860)
= $37B / 40M current descendants = $925.00/ea
$37B is probably close to the last Rainbow Coalition squeeze on corporations. (Where did all that money go?)
As for loss of freedom, that would be a lawsuit against Ghana and Nigeria, Portugal, various pirates along the Barbary Coast and assorted muslims. Not that it would get very far. Just as the 1M slaves stolen from Europe will forever be uncompensated.
Citizens? That seems awfully exclusionary against the recently arrived illegal immigrant from Nigeria who suffered a lifetime of mistreatment by Chicago... or something like that.

Reparations was never about repaying families that were once slaves. It’s about the redistribution of wealth and a constant reminder the democrat keep giving black people that they are the under class that aren’t smart enough to build their own lives.
Why is it that the dems always treat black people as unfit for doing things on their own? Talk about systemic racism. That’s it right there in a net shell.
