In the wake of George Floyd's death, police unions are coming under fire from the political left as impediments to the reform of a system many claim is racist, as politicians and organizations say the groups are more interested in protecting their members than the public.
The tension is no more clear than in Minneapolis, ground zero for the recent unrest, where City Council member Steve Fletcher -- a leader in calls there to disband the city's police department -- took Police Officers Federation of Minneapolis President Bob Kroll to task over a letter sent to members of his union following Floyd's death.

Support cops
Ban the Democrat Party
I understand how dumb these people are but I wonder if any think a partial solution is to get rid of police unions?
Can public unions get their money back for supporting democrats for the last 50 years with 99-1 of their massive political donations going to democrats?
Unions doing what unions do.
Going to bat for bad/incompetent employees so that they can keep their jobs.
Only with police work the stakes are really high.
Nope, down the drain
Maybe but the unions always support Democrats.
They deserve what the hell they get these unions have supported Dems for DECADES the chickens have come home to roost!!!
Most police unions support Republicans.
If unions are an impediment to the efficient management of an industrial business they why should we be surprised that police unions stand in the way of improving police departments? Like all unions their sole purpose is protecting their members no matter how brutal or incompetent or inefficient the individual officer may be. Maybe taking them out of the picture would be a good thing?
Imagine theres no policeman
It's easy if you try
No floor below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people stealing all your stuff
Imagine there's no law and order
It isn't hard to do
Its either kill or be killed
And no one comes to help you
Imagine all the people fighting in the streets, yoo-hooooo
You may say I'm an idiot
But I'm not the only one
Just vote democrat
And America will be done
Imagine no possessions
Because the mob stole them last night
No need for a police force
Just arm yourself for the fight
Imagine all the people living in anarchy, yoo-hooooo..
You may say I'm an idiot
But I'm not the only one
Just vote democrat
And America will be done
That statement re unions may be true. It may also be true that the LEO with the knee may be a bad/incompetent cop but, even with earlier complaints, that is yet to be established.
This was what may be perfect storm: a cop who seemed to have a history of use of excessive force trying to contain what was likely an amped-up 6'-7", 250lb man who was terribly ill. So ill, he shouldn't have been trying out-struggle 4 cops while under the influence and fear of being returned to prison.
At the end, what is the evidence the LEO killed the suspect?
Unions have long acted against the interest of the rank and file when it comes to political contributions, and those chickens are certainly coming home to roost today. Under these conditions, contributing rank and file union dues to political candidates that want to disband law enforcement and strip them of rights and authority is going to be a tough sell. They’ll probably just donate to PAC’s with pro-cop names who will launder the money to the left.
And just like that, democrats didnt like unions anymore.
Keep kneeling fellas.
I will support and proclaim for the honest men and women that work dangerous for shitty pay because they have an idealism that makes up the backbone of our nation.
There are approx 800,000 police officers in the US.
Each of them pays about $500 per year in union dues. An easy $400,000,000 per year.
I was speaking from my own (brief) experience working in a union shop when I was young. The union always went to bat and won reinstatement for people who damned well deserved to get fired.
We don’t need no logic around here!
I agree with you.
Because local prosecutors do not want to prosecute criminal cops, some sort of special counsel, perhaps from the State AG’s office, should be appointed. Failure of cops to assist the special prosecutor should also be made a criminal act subject to prosecution.
The police are essentially a gang. The gang supports its own. Nongang members are on their own.
