Mayor Lightfoot said she’s hopeful major retailers will reopen the Chicago stores that were looted or otherwise damaged during protests surrounding George Floyd’s killing by police in Minnesota. But, she’s unsure of one of the biggest.
Mayor Lightfoot said she was on a conference call with Walmart and other major retailers that had stores looted or heavily damaged during the unrest in Chicago. She said she pleaded with them to not abandon Chicago.

These big democrat controlled cities that refused to protect their own people and infrastructure during riots and looting are going to lose a significant amount of their jobs and descend into a deeper hell then they are already in, unable to even pay their public pension debts
The one side to this story...jobs, won’t get discussed much. Around fifteen-odd Wal-Marts in the area, don’t know how many got damaged.
But here’s the thing...if you make the effort to re-open, and cover the deductibles, and accept that loss....who is to say in November (after the election)...another riot week occurs, and repeats itself. Same with the trial in Minnesota with the cops...if that’s a hung jury...more riots.
If I were Wal-Mart, I’d explain the commercial profit situation, and that I’m only willing to play this game one single time.
I have not set foot in a walmart in over 12 years. If walmart tells her to F off, I ... Still won’t set foot in a walmart.
They won’t abandon Chicago over race. But restocking entire stores gets expensive. Plywood is cheaper.
Wal-mart has more stores than most companies have employees. A store in Canada tried to unionized so they simply shut it down - permanently.
They may do the same thing in Chicago. I had an acquaintence that had a chain of small grocery stores back in the 70’s and 80’s. He opened a store in Seattle’s central district and the shoplifting was absolutely horrific. He tried to raise prices to compensate, but it was no use. I closed the store permanently.
Not all of the US is civilized.
The small retailers will never be back.
I went to my local Walmart yesterday. It was shut down. The Lowes nearby was open but the windows were boarded up.
You couldn’t pay me to shop the once Magnificent Mile again.
