The one side to this story...jobs, won’t get discussed much. Around fifteen-odd Wal-Marts in the area, don’t know how many got damaged.

But here’s the thing...if you make the effort to re-open, and cover the deductibles, and accept that loss....who is to say in November (after the election)...another riot week occurs, and repeats itself. Same with the trial in Minnesota with the cops...if that’s a hung jury...more riots.

If I were Wal-Mart, I’d explain the commercial profit situation, and that I’m only willing to play this game one single time.

Don’t know about Target but I know Walmart is self insured.

I wrote most of my MBA papers on Walmart as they publish all their data and they have a metric for EVERYTHING. I think it was Indonesia where the ruling party wanted a substantial bribe to allow them to continue doing business. Walmart refused. A “spontaneous” mob burned a store down. Walmart left.

Another place they left was Germany. It wasn’t an issue with bribes. What I think it boiled down to was Germany didn’t want them and stopped them from using the business model that was a proven success everywhere else. (If I recall, they made as much money on Sunday as they made on any three days in the rest of the week and (among other things) Germany would not allow them to open on Sunday.)
