De Santis says he's sending 500 National Guard troops to DC
The Hill ^ | 06 03 2020 | J. Edward Moreno

Florida Gov. Ron De Santis (R) said Wednesday that he’s sending 500 of his state’s National Guard troops to Washington, D.C., to aid in responding to protests.

The governor made the announcement at a Universal Orlando Resort, which is set to open Friday.

The extra 500 troops come after a relatively peaceful night of protests in Washington. In previous nights, law enforcement deployed pepper balls and rubber bullets while seeking to quell demonstrations in the city.

Members of the D.C. National Guard have been spotted in several parts of the city amid the protests and incidents of looting in recent days, with troops seen guarding monuments on the National Mall.

D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser (D) has clashed with President Trump over his approach to law enforcement. The president has called Bowser's handling of the unrest too relaxed while she has said that his rhetoric incited some of the violence happening in the city.

On Wednesday, Bowser said that she was looking to challenge the president's ability to call in the National Guard from other states without her approval. The mayor has previously called reported inquiries from federal officials about temporarily taking hold of the city police department an "affront to even our limited home rule."

No Republican gov. should be sending troops to Democratic-run enclaves even if Democrat leaders beg them.

Imagine the headline if a Florida NG kills a protestor.

It's a set up and disaster ready to happen.

Not a good move, although I appreciate his purpose. I’m not sure it is legal for another State to send their NG across State borders. Anyone know the law about this?

Notice how they casually slip in the TRUTH: The Park Police and law enforcement did NOT use tear gas, as the media reported.

NG has been federalized. Governor can offer, and Trump can send them where needed.

As a conservative Floridian, I support my governor.

I don’t expect the troops will have to be deployed all that long.

Thanks for understanding the situation!

He might need them in FL ....I just read that antifa is planning to march on our mayor’s house tonight here in Jacksonville. That said, I think the Sheriff has been pretty good at controlling them so far, and there doesn’t appear to be huge black support for them to hide behind.

Thank goodness it is not New York or they would have to pay New York income taxes.

Did that happen very recently? I read that Trump federalized the Guard in three states - New York, California and Washington state - to help with Wuhan virus efforts. But I’ve seen nothing about the Guard being federalized for riot control.

Showing once more he’s a leader, rather than the usual governor follower.

DeSantis sending them at the request of the Feds. Not sure there needs to be an announcement.

Probably MPs or some special skills.

Too few people fail to understand the difference between protest and riot.

Rioters are not protesters. The Tea Party events were protests. The feral animals burning down businesses and killing people are not protestors.

I have a real hard time believing we don’t have enough federal cops around DC to maintain order in government areas. If DC pols and police don’t want to police residential neighborhoods then let them burn. That’s what those people voted for.
