Patricia Castillo remembers when the Newfane Rehab and Health Care Center, where her mother lived, notified her that a patient had just been admitted from a nearby Niagara County hospital with COVID-19.
Jill Sawyer, whose father lived at the same nursing home, remembers getting notified, too. It was just a death sentence, said Sawyer. The virus raced through Newfane, killing Castillos mother and Sawyers father and 24 other residents.
My father was only 70 years old, Sawyer sighs, and he was still shuffling around and calling me 20 times a day. Now, she says the phone doesnt ring and she misses that.

Gov. Cuomo should have been mentioned somewhere in the first paragraph. Because he is responsible for those deaths.
That is sad. It sounds like her dad was still pretty active and involved in life and with his daughter.
Yes, you’re right. Cuomo was behind this.
Cuomo and the other sick governors were intentionally pumping up the death toll numbers to hurt Trump and allow for dictitorial powers.
> Cuomo was behind this. <
Its almost beyond comprehension. Special virus field hospitals had been set up. And there was a navy hospital ship in NYC harbor. Yet Cuomo sent those Wuhan virus patients to the one place they shouldnt have gone - nursing homes.
I couldnt figure out why Cuomo would do that. It made no sense. Then I read that NY nursing homes gave Cuomo huge campaign contributions (link below). Could those virus patients have meant big money for those homes? Is Cuomo really that evil? Thats the only explanation I can think of for his behavior.

why was the 70 yro in a nursing home?....was he profoundly disabled and no one could take care of him at home?....very sickly?....
NY Post is pretty good. It doesn’t hold back.
Maybe he sold off his estate and chose to be there.
“Bottom line: 11,000 to 12,000 nursing-home and assisted-living residents have died from COVID-19, half of all the virus deaths statewide.
The health-care think tank American Commitment also pegs the deaths at 12,000.
That awful death toll didnt have to happen. Its six times the number of nursing-home fatalities as in Florida or California, both more populous states.”
“New York stuck with its deadly policy until May 10, way too long. Why? Because it wasnt a mistake. It was a sell-out.
The hospital industrys lobbying organization, the Greater New York Hospital Association, is a mega-donor to the state Democratic Partys housekeeping committee, which helps elect Cuomo. It gave over $1 million in 2018. The hospital industry holds more sway in Albany than real estate or Wall Street.”
Cuomo is a murderer.
Lots of unionized workers in healthcare.
Families need to lawyer up and visit the white house. Federal charges need to be brought against those governors responsible. My guess is the liability protections they have so conveniently passed in thier budgets will no longer protect them as civilians
He didn’t just send WuFlu patients back.
He allowed positive staffers to continue working until earlier this month.
LouieFisk found this gem:
Theres whats called depraved heart murder - from Findlaw cuz I dont trust my memory right now:
Often the intent to kill (or malice aforethought) element of murder can be satisfied by showing that the defendant showed extreme indifference to human life. These are also known as depraved heart murders.
Acting with extreme recklessness and knowing that act is dangerous to human life (i.e., firing through the floor of your third-story apartment) and ending a human life may satisfy this intent element, even if the person never intended to kill anyone. This has been argued in fatal DUI cases in which the driver was far too intoxicated to form any intent.
It seems to me that forcing nursing homes to accept patients infected and still infectious people while safe alternatives were available (Javits Center, USNS Comfort) would be an act of a "depraved heart".
Additionally I understand NY State saves 120K+ in Medicaid expenditures for each Medicaid funded nursing home resident that leaves the system.

The Medicaid savings are really about the cost of hospital care vs care in nursing homes/skilled nursing facilities. Especially since it looked like elderly patients could be expected to be hospitalized for weeks.
Cuomo sent them back to die as a cost saving measure. Counties in NYS went along with it because counties cost share Medicaid with the state.
Why the administratorsame of these facilities went along with it should be the subject of a federal investigation.
There seems to be a big hush about this in the Trump administration.
