A German government official appeared to court Twitter to relocate its headquarters to Europe as the social media giant faces tensions with President Trump.

“Hey @Twitter & @jack, this is an invitation to move to Germany! Here you are free to criticize the government as well as to fight fake news,” tweeted Thomas Jarzombek, who oversees tech affairs for Germany’s Economic Affairs Ministry.

“We have a great startup and tech ecosystem, your company would be a perfect fit and I will open any doors for you!” he added, tagging President Trump.

Except under the EU rules, like the meme ban, they’re not free to do anything of the sort.

If Twitter did, you’d see 1/2 the people switch to Parler

I think Twitter is well aware of how the EU treats US tech companies.

They’re better off with Trump.

Good. They can go. But if they leave the USA they might get their Dot Com address revoked since that’s a US address.

Imagine twitter without Memes or libel.

They couldn’t exist in the EUSSR.

And with their privacy laws they slaughter the spyvertising model that Twitter, Facebook and other companies rely on.

France is either flirting with, or just passed, a law which makes the platform provider subject to big fines if "objectionable" content is not removed promptly. Twitter is probably already recognizing that EU treatment of free speech is far, far worse than what President Trump can dish out.

Article 13 kills media sharing on it. Any user can have anything attached to their account nuked, even information others are sharing. Also libel laws are stricter in Germany than America.

It would be like moving GM to Sudan because oil is cheaper there.

28 May: If Trump kicks out Twitter, there’s always Germany
by Thomson Reuters Foundation (Reporting by Douglas Busvine; Editing by Susan Fenton)
Jarzombek’s offer contrasts with Germany’s frequently testy relationship with U.S. social media giants, which face fines of up to 50 million euros ($55 million) if they fail to quickly remove hateful content from their sites.

But Europe’s largest economy is also keen to establish itself as a hub for tech entrepreneurship and Twitter Inc would be the ultimate catch. ($1 = 0.9074 euros) https://news.trust.org/item/20200528133415-ddkdm/

By Jonathan Amos, BBC Science Correspondent, Seville
“Earth observation is the cornerstone of German space policy,” said Thomas Jarzombek, from the nation’s Economic Affairs Ministry.
“People are more and more interested in climate change and what we can do to protect ourselves against it. Information is key because we can only really act against climate change if we understand what it going on. Copernicus gives us better data,” he told BBC News...
