The text of the following statement was released by the Governments of the United States of America, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
Begin Text:
Signatories to this statement reiterate our deep concern regarding Beijings decision to impose a national security law in Hong Kong.
Hong Kong has flourished as a bastion of freedom. The international community has a significant and long-standing stake in Hong Kongs prosperity and stability. Direct imposition of national security legislation on Hong Kong by the Beijing authorities, rather than through Hong Kongs own institutions as provided for under Article 23 of the Basic Law, would curtail the Hong Kong peoples liberties, and in doing so, dramatically erode Hong Kongs autonomy and the system that made it so prosperous.
Chinas decision to impose a new national security law on Hong Kong lies in direct conflict with its international obligations under the principles of the legally-binding, UN-registered Sino-British Joint Declaration. The proposed law would undermine the One Country, Two Systems framework. It also raises the prospect of prosecution in Hong Kong for political crimes, and undermines existing commitments to protect the rights of Hong Kong people including those set out in the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.
We are also extremely concerned that this action will exacerbate the existing deep divisions in Hong Kong society; the law does nothing to build mutual understanding and foster reconciliation within Hong Kong. Rebuilding trust across Hong Kong society by allowing the people of Hong Kong to enjoy the rights and freedoms they were promised can be the only way back from the tensions and unrest that the territory has seen over the last year.
The worlds focus on a global pandemic requires enhanced trust in governments and international cooperation. Beijings unprecedented move risks having the opposite effect.
As Hong Kongs stability and prosperity are jeopardized by the new imposition, we call on the Government of China to work with the Hong Kong SAR Government and the people of Hong Kong to find a mutually acceptable accommodation that will honor Chinas international obligations under the UN-filed Sino-British Joint Declaration.
China just killed 100,000 Americans.
Let’s write a letter about that too.
Start a nuclear program AND a serious ELINT program.
When the Reds do drills, track where their high-level comms are going to/coming from. Reconnoiter with HUMINT. You might well find Xi’s and the ChiCom leadership’s hidey-holes. If the balloon goes up, aim all the nukes there.
Exactly right. With rain and cisterns even Hong Kong could do it.
“ChiComs withholding water in these circumstances would be a recognized crime against humanity.”
Would China care?
I think in this country and many in the EU so many politicos are so in bed with China they would blow it off.
Notice recently the China controlled WHO said hydroxychloroquine doesn’t work and Germany, France, and Italy immediately stopped using it.
Trump is another story. He’s made it very clear China is our enemy since his campaign.
China basically paid for Hunter Biden’s 2nd mansion.
Maybe we can use Hong Kong as a proxie launch site like how China uses North Korea for Nuke testing...( /sarc)
Any agreement the CCP signs is worth less than the paper on which it is written.
I will wait for Trump's response tomorrow.
Well it should have been done prior to the handover. Too late now.
Well it should have been done prior to the handover. Too late now.
One has to wonder if maybe they just haven't drilled deep and/or sideways enough yet . . .
You need to there and show them how to do it.
And yet another reason to stop doing business with the ChiComs and expel all their H1B and student visa holders ...
You make some good points.
It seems as though China is so sure it is going to be #1 in global power that it will disregard every international norm, rule, or ideology it does not like. Not only disregard it, but fight against it.
I like the idea of steadily revoking China’s benefits on the international stage. It should have it’s Most Favored Nation trading status revoked. No more “free” trade agreements with it.
I agree that it should be expelled from the international community. If we can’t do that, then I love your idea of a split world. Let the outlaw nations group together in the UN and let the free world band together in a new organization. I doubt the world has the nerve to do it. They are intimidated by the population of Asians and the markets they represent.
We were able to destroy the Soviet Union by bankrupting them. There's no way in hell that we'll be able to do the same with the ChiComs.
Actual statement:
We think what you’re doing is bad. But none of us are willing to get into a shooting war with you. And we can’t financially survive any form of sanctions. So can you do it more quietly and easily ignored.
Thanks
The lease expired. Without going to war there was nothing UK could do. Frankly the agreement was always just there to mollify people and avoid having Hong Kong’s economy tank. It was ALWAYS going to be brought into regular China at some point.
“The lease expired. Without going to war there was nothing UK could do.”
Wrong.
Why do you say things that are not true?
Is stupidity and ignorance, or is it purposeful disseminated disinformation.
I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. Sorry you’re too stupid to understand how and why Hong Kong went back to China.
“I didnt say anything that wasnt true. Sorry youre too stupid to understand how and why Hong Kong went back to China.”
Oh, digging in I see.
Tell me. What lease are you referring to?
