The Korean Shopkeeper Defense
“If the Perp was White, would there be Rioting in the Streets and Looting?”
My guess is that his mistreatment by the police triggered a heart attack or asthmatic condition (or both), like the guy who died in Staten Island who was arrested for selling loose cigarettes.
Clearly the officer kneeling on Floyd's neck should be prosecuted. It's not clear to me if it's murder or manslaughter, and it's not clear to me how the other police officers can be prosecuted except as accessories.
I think you’re right about that. I used to work in a building with the classroom for police cadets across the hall. Many were overweight and even shorter than I am.
Talking to them was a rude awakening as well.
I remember reading once (lately) that over 70% of officers in NOLA had criminal records prior to joining the force.
“...the other police officers...”
If they could hear and see what went on, I think they were blameworthy, too.
I mean, would they also stand by watching a mugging or worse?
Yeah, fight it out in front of the judge(figuratively).
Well, you said bystanders which I took to mean the non-police types watching.
But, yes, I agree about the other officers' dereliction.
There was a photo I saw yesterday that showed an opposite angle from the video and there were 2 LEOs plus the kneeler on the ground with another LEO standing to the left. And not one of them chose to say “He’s under control, ease off.”
Claiming it was murder before an investigation is done, when there are numerous other possibilities, is inciting a lynch mob.
Really? So do you think that if an elderly person in a nursing home dies while being beaten by an sob, we should wait for the autopsy? Hey, they were elderly, maybe they had a heart attack due to fright. Maybe, they had a stroke. We know there is a drug opioid epidemic, so perhaps they overdosed.
No, what is fanning these flames are that folks continue to make excuses for these police thugs, and refuse to acknowledge the thug behavior right before their eyes.
And make no mistake, it is not just the one pinning the guy down by his neck, but the other 4 who stood there and watched.
Deafening roar of crickets.
All of that is separate from the cops actions, which appear to be unjustified. A young lady of my acquaintance was recently brought into compliance by the police. She weighs about 110. It took 3 of them. And she was not on drugs.
Bystander = any one ‘standing by’
It’s a broad term but also includes anyone in uniform... especially as THEY are there to enforce the law and keep order.
OK. Why don't you go out and hold somebody on the ground - for whatever reason you want, call it a game. And then, after the guy says he can't breathe, keep at it until he dies. See how long it takes for the police to arrest you and charge you with murder.
Your proposed experiment is ridiculous. Regardless of what the police did, they killed a person who was allegedly passing a bad check, or about to commit a forgery. There is no reason to suggest that the man would have died if he had simply been cited, or arrested without the use of excessive force.
Laws on homicide are very clear. Taking actions which result in someone's death lead to homicide charges. We all know that any civilian who did the same kind of thing and caused a death would be charged and likely convicted.
Don’t expect the cops in Minneapolis to protect the good guys. Minneapolis is run by the people who protected the muzz cop who murdered the innocent Australian woman.
They are saying he died at the hospital.
He was dead before he left the ground. And they called an ambulance. Took him away on a stretcher...not moving.
I’ve watched the video several times. It was lengthy. Too long for someones neck to be treated that way. I couldn’t tell but it looked like the policeman had his other knee on Floyd’s back. Also he was handcuffed. Bad apples in all professions!
There is video of his initial contact arrest from his car, video of him sitting on the sidewalk and then being led to the point where the original video is seen. In all of these videos there is no resisting to be seen.
What we have here is the killing of an American citizen, in broad daylight, in front of citizens while cameras are rolling.
Heck we even see an off duty first responder begging the police to at least check for a pulse after the man becomes unresponsive.
In every way, this was a huge miscarriage of justice. The hidden gotcha video simply does not exist. Remember, this man was cuffed from the time they pulled him from his car.
In no way shape or form, was this ok. It should serve as a warning to us all, that the thin blue line only serves to divide us from them.
I agree. There was enough there that could have stormed the 4 policemen.
Just to get the guy off his neck, not to free him entirely but unfortunately
no one did.
I was raising a legal, not a moral question. I agree they are morally culpable, just not sure what the law says. In most places, the common law implies no duty to assist. I don’t know if the rules are different for police officers. They may be open to prosecution as accessories before or after the fact.

Video of initial contact. Cuffed from this point on.
