Trump: We will regulate or 'close down' social media platforms before they silence conservatives
The Washington Times ^ | May 27, 2020 | David Sherfinski

President Trump on Wednesday threatened to “strongly regulate” or close down social media platforms if they silence conservative voices, stepping up his criticism after Twitter attached fact-checking context to Mr. Trump’s tweets for the first time on Tuesday.

“Republicans feel that Social Media Platforms totally silence conservatives voices. We will strongly regulate, or close them down, before we can ever allow this to happen,” the president said on Twitter.

“We saw what they attempted to do, and failed, in 2016. We can’t let a more sophisticated version of that…happen again,” the president said.

They cannot on one hand “curate” what is published, and on the other hand be free from liability concerning the content of that publication.

Like it or not, yes they can.

Section 230 of the CDA was put in place explicitly to allow exactly this - the moderation of content without picking up the liability of a publisher.

It was driven by arguments over Prodigy moderating its forums and was intended to protect them, and other interactive computer users, when they moderated content to provide a decent environment for their users.

That’s why it will be overturned.

You’re a solid FReeper. Lately though, I’ve noticed your trending toward attack, rather than patience through process. Unfortunately, the evil corrupt operators have years to infiltrate and as such, it will just take time to overthrow the minions. Be patient FRiend =o)

Do you mean overturned or replaced with new legislation?

It's survived multiple court challenges.

Legislatively overturned.
Maybe replaced.

Frankly Trump should have reacted this way long before now.
/

Obama would have had the IRS giving all these effers an anal exam if all these platforms were doing this to the Bolsheviks.
Can you imagine if this was reversed? The entire deep state would be setting these tech giants up for federal prison with some concocted charge.

We can’t play nice anymore. Too much at stake.

We have anti trust laws.

Not only are these companies monopolies, they have strong crony ties to people in government.

BINGO especially your last part. THEY ARE DOING THIS ON THE BEHALF OF POLITICIANS ON THE LEFT. THIS IS GOVERNMENT CENSORSHIP BY PROXY.

The real libs here LOVE defending these big tech platform holders of the public square.

We all know who they’re working for in the end. NOBODY on this site should be against taking them down.

Facebook and other internet companies have become de facto world wide communications networks. They should be no more allowed to censor speech than a telephone company can.

When you apply for a job or college admissions, your Facebook page is considered. This proves that Facebook has become more than a simple, private company and must not be allowed to censor speech.

So how many smaller mom and pop networking platforms are feeling squashed?....an investigation into possible monopolistic practices can be launched...(maybe a good special prosecutor can keep Twitter and google tied up...say for about 3 years or so.../s)

Don’t understand your veiled sarcasm, so it has no effect.

However, I’m HARDLY a blind follower.
Been here since November 2000 and kicked off because I wasn’t one and expressed my thoughts which weren’t welcome.

...shows how little you know as you throw ignorant snot.

Didn’t say you are a Magic Letter guy, just that you sound like one.

And my reference to blind support is the way you seem to be admonishing me to be blindly supportive of Trump in all my comments here.

I agree. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Facebook & Twitter have made themselves quite eligible for the same regulations that apply to TV, radio and the airways.

this is my suggestion.

demand that the Internet giants behave
like common-carriers.

or force their content
off of FCC controlled spectrum
