The now-viral video of a white woman who called the cops on a black man in Central Park is disturbing but weve got bigger fish to fry than pursuing charges against her, NYPD First Deputy Commissioner Benjamin Tucker said Tuesday morning. The video shows the woman, identified in reports as Amy Cooper, on the phone telling police: There is an African American man. I am in Central Park. He is recording me and threatening myself and my dog. The man had asked the woman to leash her dog. In an interview with PIX11, Tucker called it an unfortunate incident, and frankly, its hard to understand what she did. The fact she invoked race is disturbing, Tucker said. But also, listen, shes got a dog. The signs say dogs must be leashed. She wasnt in compliance, so in effect, she was the problem, not the gentleman who asked her to put the dog on the leash. It was a simple thing. But the NYPD isnt looking to bring charges against Cooper, he said. Were not going to pursue that, Tucker said. Weve got bigger fish to fry, I think, and the DA would never prosecute that. Its not even clear that it would be actionable in terms of any violation. The man who could be heard in the video, Christian Cooper, said he asked Amy to put the dog on a leash, and when she didnt, he offered the pooch a treat. The only way they can keep the dog from eating the treat is to put it on a leash, he told NBC Monday. At some point, she decided, Im gonna play the race card, I guess. Worse, an Upper West Side Karen! But what he doesnt mention is that NYPD is also terrified of the Karens, and has not been issuing citations for unleashed dogs or dogs in specifically no dog zones for years because theyre afraid of trying to do it. So Karen probably thought theyd be on her side.
They used to enforce the no-dog or leash laws in the park, but in the last few years Ive seen that unleashed dogs are more the rule than the exception.
Has anyone asked why the man was telling the woman to leash the dog? Was the dog unruly? Barking? Running wild? Or was he being a Black Chad? Frankly, it’s not my business to butt in unless the behavior in question is harming or has the potential to harm those around the person.
Yes.
He’s a birdwatcher, in an area well know for birdwatching, and is such because dogs aren’t supposed to be running off leash there (ground birds).
I’m an avid dog walker and dislike how much area is off limits to dogs, and how much requires a leash, but some areas are inappropriate for dogs.
But since he’s black, and she’s white, I’ll bet at least one person thinks he’s in the wrong.
What are “Karens”? And while we’re at it, who is “Florida Man”? I seem to have missed the origin of these cultural expressions.
I love dogs, but I will damned well tell someone to leash their dog if it’s being a nuisance and I’m in an area where dogs are supposed to be leashed. More than one twit has let their mutt take a dump right in the picnic area and gotten indignant when called on it.
The huge number of stories that start out with the phrase “Florida Man arrested for (having sex with alligator, driving backwards, etc....)

Everyone’s all abuzz about this.
But what actually happened?
A Karen is a stupid, bossy, entitled woman (of any race, but most often seen as Caucasian) who demands things that she is not entitled to get and does things like demand to speak to your manager in a place you don’t work at, knowing you don’t work there, to get what she wants.

Examples of Karens:

Karen is most often reputed to have a particular bob style haircut, seen in this article:
https://www.vox.com/2020/2/5/21079162/karen-name-insult-meme-manager
“Florida Man” is a lot easier. Basically, it’s a stereotype based on the huge number of news articles that are titled “Florida Man” followed by “does (insert name of truly colossally stupid activity here)”
Case in point from the last 24 hours: https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/25/us/florida-kidnapping-covid-19-checkpoint-trnd/index.html
Here is another example of a Karen caught on video:
Karen will lie to authority, cheat and steal to get what she feels she is rightfully entitled to or to get revenge. Karen is known to refuse to obey rules and believes the world revolves around her and her alone. Unsurprisingly, Karen also often demonstrates severe Narcissistic Personality Disorder:

The dog was running in an area set aside as a nature area and clearly posted with No Dogs signs everywhere. The privileged Karens ignore the leash laws (except for certain enclosed areas, dogs are supposed to be on leash in Central Park) and even the no-dog signs and the police are afraid of them too so they dont give them citations the way they used to.
This guy was a regular bird watcher in the area, and I thought he had a very good technique for defusing a situation: offer the dog a treat, and then the dog mommy, as they call themselves, will run forward and leash the dog and drag it off to prevent it from eating the treat.
She was the one who announced she was going to call the cops and say that an African American man had threatened to murder her.
Sort of like the woman here in Florida who drowned her autistic son by pushing him into a canal and then called the cops to say that two black men had stopped her car and taken her child away. Fortunately, there was actually a video from a local camera of her pushing the child into the canal.
And fortunately this man in NYC was smart enough to video Karen threatening him.
She should have been arrested for animal cruelty as soon as the video showing her dragging the poor dog around by the collar very obviously putting it in distress and choking it.
I also discovered Kyle and Chad..
I do agree with that. I don’t care if its a well-behaved animal, but if its being a bother, then yes, I would say something.
The bottom line is that not every uncomfortable interaction between two people needs to go on social media in order to ruin someone's life. Her life is literally ruined. I think this went a tad far.
Yup! There’s also a sub-type of Karen, the Becky.
However, the Karen is by far and away the most common of all these species and can be found everywhere.
Actually, the guy stated that this problem is so common in the area and interferes with his legitimate activity (birdwatching) that he carries the treats to deal with the problem, not that he’s simply going out to troll dog owners.
Again, what the guy did was fine. The issue I have is ruining someone’s life because of a short video of two people having a private verbal altercation. Do you believe she should have lost her job because of this?
There has been friction between birdwatchers and dog owners for decades.
IMHO, threatening to call the police, and lying on the phone to them (’he’s threatening me’) are damned serious things, one trigger happy cop taking her at her lying word...
Rude dog people have been pulling this crap for years, she added racist swatting into it. I hope she gets the book thrown at her, too.
Who said it here before, scratch the surface of a Democrat, and find a racist inside... or something to that effect.
