The Coronavirus Is Deadliest Where Democrats Live
The New York Times ^ | 25 May 2020 | Jennifer Medina and Robert Gebeloff

Posted on 05/25/2020 7:35:28 AM PDT by Theoria

Beyond perception and ideology, there are starkly different realities for red and blue America right now.

The staggering American death toll from the coronavirus, now approaching 100,000, has touched every part of the country, but the losses have been especially acute along its coasts, in its major cities, across the industrial Midwest, and in New York City.

The devastation, in other words, has been disproportionately felt in blue America, which helps explain why people on opposing sides of a partisan divide that has intensified in the past two decades are thinking about the virus differently. It is not just that Democrats and Republicans disagree on how to reopen businesses, schools and the country as a whole. Beyond perception, beyond ideology, there are starkly different realities for red and blue America right now.

Democrats are far more likely to live in counties where the virus has ravaged the community, while Republicans are more likely to live in counties that have been relatively unscathed by the illness, though they are paying an economic price. Counties won by President Trump in 2016 have reported just 27 percent of the virus infections and 21 percent of the deaths — even though 45 percent of Americans live in these communities, a New York Times analysis has found.

The very real difference in death rates has helped fuel deep disagreement over the dangers of the pandemic and how the country should proceed. Right-wing media, which moved swiftly from downplaying the severity of the crisis to calling it a Democratic plot to bring down the president, has exacerbated the rift. And even as the nation’s top medical experts note the danger of easing restrictions, communities across the country are doing so, creating a patchwork of regulations, often along ideological lines.

Democrats live in fear and worry about lots of things. This degrades the immune system.

Duh ! Figure it out. The Democrat party is made up of Urban dwellers in big cities. The close density of those population centers gives an obvious rise to the transfer of Coronavirus germs. The Republican population lives in more rural and suburban areas where the density of the population is more spread out. Al once has to do is locate the Dem. population centers which is largely Urban and compare that to the Republican population centers which is predominately Suburban and Rural and you get Red States which have NYC, L.A. Phil. etc. etc. and Blue States which have large Rural populations. A Dummy like me can figure this one out.

ah yes- the spin of the NYSlimes:

“Why has the virus slammed some parts of the country so much harder than others? Part of the answer is population density. Nearly a third of Americans live in one of the 100 most densely populated counties in the United States — urban communities and adjacent suburbs — and it is there the virus has taken its greatest toll, with an infection rate three times as high as the rest of the nation and a death rate four times as high.”

No mention of lib policies such as sanctuary cities which help fuel population density

“Amid the pandemic, there are densely populated red counties near major cities with high infection rates — Suffolk County in New York, Jefferson Parrish in Louisiana, and Monmouth County in New Jersey, for example.

But those are true outliers.”

Yet they don’t offer evidence as to why they claim those are “true outliers”.

You are right on every point. There is graphic of all the headlines from the mainstream media from Jan/Feb totally downplaying the coronavirus as nothing to worry about.

Two words:

Population Density.

rates of infection can possibly go up exponentially as population density goes up mathematically. Twice as many people living in the same area probably leads to much more than twice the rate of infection.

Heavily populated areas are much more often blue, for a variety of reasons as we all know.

Although I live in a much less dense area and am a Goldwater type paleoconservative, I have zero problems wearing a mask or social distancing and don’t know anyone I respect who does; just courtesy and common sense, not a political statement, submission to totalitarianism or anything to do with personal freedom/

So the entire article is just a ‘DOH!

Crime is deadliest where they live as well. Come to think of it, everything is worse where they live. Is there a connection between democrats and bad things happening?

“The Democrat party is made up of Urban dwellers in big cities. The close density of those population centers gives an obvious rise to the transfer of Coronavirus germs.”

One must consider that in many blue states over 50% (and sometimes 60%) of the deaths have occurred in nursing homes. Cuomo and other blue state governors fostered policies that allowed SAR-CoV-2 entry into those facilities.

That’s because Democrats ARE the disease, not WuFlu. Maybe it should be called the Democrat virus.

You make a valid point earlier, but “Blue states” are Democrat and “Red States” are Republican.

The article is a beautiful example of living with blinders on. The authors start with the assumption that Republicans are wrong and taking unnecessary risks:

“They dismiss factual reports from the news media as exaggerated and trying to incite panic, because the reports don’t align with their own experience.”

Then they set out to explain why. Well, they also know that Republicans only care about themselves and their own people and not about anyone else.

So they find the answer to their question:

Republicans are being reckless and not trusting science because they are selfish and shortsighted.

BUT

If all that is true, then the republican areas would be full of cases, and the Democrat areas would be virus free.

But that would assume that leftists connect policies and personal behavior with actual results and then reconsider their policies in light of results, which they manifestly do not.

Policies and personal behavior are about virtue and virtue signalling only.
