Crushingly crowded public transport. The world's oldest population. A huge outbreak on a cruise ship. A state of emergency without penalties. It sounded like a recipe for a coronavirus catastrophe, and there were fears among public health experts that Japan could become the next Italy or New York. But it hasn't happened. The country hasn't exactly escaped unscathed. About 800 people have died and more than 16,000 have been infected in a country of 126 million...

I think it was due to a cult in the south part of the country, whose leader had everyone packed in together, for days, without masks.
I think. Maybe.
People in Japan dont touch their faces. Its considered improper to do so.
Could be a factor.
It’s time to proclaim it publicly....the Democrat governors that forced Covid positive patients into nursing homes full of populations vulnerable to the disease are guilty of changing those Nursing Homes into Auschwitz level death chambers.
There is no excuse for that.New York City had excess capacity built up for them that could have held the covid positive elderly until they tested clear of the virus. One facility, a 21 million dollar field hospital was just closed because it was never used.
They(the MSM and various politicians) will attempt to blame Trump for not going over the governors’ heads and just taking control the way FDR did during World War 2. I understand Trump recognizes the trap and the precedent that also sets in light of certain FEMA based executive orders that allow the Fed’s to just take over everything while splitting up the US into various Fema managed “territories” governed directly by the president and the US military. The constitution does grant wide latitude to the states as well.
Still, the Fed’s will get some of the blame by not countermanding what Cuomo et al did with respect to those Nursing Homes. It’s good the light is being shown now but the damage is done. Trump was ill served by many of his advisors who he trusted to do their jobs correctly!
Universal face masks wearing (not with “social distancing) and from the beginning (for the U.S. it could have began in March), not lock downs, is mostly how Japan’s numbers stayed lower. And, I think in some ways the lock downs made some things worse for some folks (and Japan did not have them). As an example of that point was a NYC report on its hospitalized Wuhan Virus patients - 66% were NOT the people who got to go to work every day, they were the people who said they had been staying at home. One theory is that infection = exposure X time (constant exposure contact over some period of time), that does not happen with random hit & miss mere seconds in passing on the street.
Maybe conservatives were smart enough to get grandma out of the nursing home before she caught it.
Its not a flu either. The flu is the influenza virus.
COVIDis a corona virus.
Different critter.
Must. Eat. More. Sushi.
Interesting.
PING!
When the Japanese see a threat, they _act_, _together_.
They don’t make up wacko conspiracy theories or cobble together phony data to convince themselves there is no threat.
They act on the precautionary principle—the threat is real until there is overwhelming evidence to the contrary.
Many in the modern US, on the other hand, fight for their right to partee...
They also have a honor culture over there, based on an ancient code called the Bushido, IIRC. People refusing to follow the directives to avoid spreading this disease would probably be regarded as something lower than dog crap.
I saw an report about those packed-in crowds on Tee Vee earlier today when the beaches opened back up for Memorial Day. This wasn’t some MSM-style fiddle-faddle with a telephoto lens, either. The video I saw was taken FROM ABOVE.
What a bunch of fools!
Japan sent two reusable masks to every household.
Japan was already use to wearing masks during flu season. They have masks and sanitizer readily available in stores.
They also closed museums, theaters, attractions, sports, and schools in early March.
They advised their people to avoid confined and crowded places and close human contact. They encouraged working from home, avoiding unnecessary outings, and encouraged social distancing. They also bow instead of shake hands.
You may well be right about the quercetin in green tea. Add to that zinc from seafood. Natto which they consider to boost the immune systems has been speculated as a factor. Natto has K2, not sure how else it might boose the immune system.
Also not big recyclers. At the Japanese I am friends with. When I asked where the recycle bin was for glass and plastic, they looked at me like I had four eyes.

Actually , Japanese are big recyclers . Cans , bottles ( inc. plastic ) , newspapers , metal , cardboard boxes ...virtually anything that can be recycled . A truck comes to our neighborhood from Mon. thru Friday and we have a monthly schedule . Reg. garbage is picked up on Mon. and Thurs . Items for recycle are collected on the other 3 days .
That was the plan . I haven’t seen any yet . Also masks were impossible to find once the panic hit . I still haven’t worn one .
I wonder if it is a generational thing. Most of the Japanese I interact with are 21-30. Maybe it reminds them too much of chores at home.
