Scammers posing as out-of-work residents have bilked Washington state out of “hundreds of millions of dollars” in unemployment benefits, a top official said.
The fraudsters submitted bogus unemployment claims under the names of tens of thousands of people whose personal information had been stolen, said Suzi LeVine, commissioner of the state’s Employment Security Department.
“I realize that this is a jaw-dropping figure,” LeVine told reporters Thursday. She didn’t provide a specific dollar amount.
The revelation came amid a massive surge in jobless claims during the coronavirus pandemic. More than 38 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits in the last nine weeks as lockdowns meant to control the virus sparked layoffs across the country.
Washington’s total claims for unemployment benefits rose by about 369,000 to more than 1.6 million last week — a surge that officials partly attributed to a spike in fraudulent claims.
The Secret Service has reportedly warned that a Nigerian fraud ring was swiping millions of dollars in benefits from Washington and six other states using stolen data such as Social Security numbers.

Fraud of government benefits of all kinds is a big racket in Washington state, but this is a pretty big number.

seriously, when a rat govt like mine here in Wa St gets used to handing out money to illegals, to bums, to druggies, etc, the system is obviously not set up to be fair, nor legal.

My daughter a dental hygienist, applied for unemployment on March 16, after her office closed. It took 4 weeks for her to get her unemployment. How could this happen, if they were correctly verifying claims? One little coincidence, her co-worker who was other than white got her claim approved in 1 week. Could it be checking the “correct” race could have possibly caused this theft?
Are these same people going to show up on the voter rolls?
Just last week my state got their self-employed unemployement site up and working. A long time when all the places I did work for were closed and I had no money coming in for the last couple of months.
There was a delay before I could complete my application because they wanted info from my 2019 taxes ....that I hadn’t yet completed yet. But once that was done I finished the application on Monday afternoon.
By Thursday morning I had 8 weeks of unemployment plus the $600 extra each week showing up in my bank account. Frankly, I was amazed that it took just a few days. I’m even “white”. ;-)
