For a City Already in a ‘Death Spiral,’ What’s After Lockdown?

In Farmington, N.M., the economy was already struggling. Now everyone knows someone who is out of work because of the coronavirus. Very few say they know anyone who got sick.

To understand why Mayor Nate Duckett wants Farmington, N.M., to reopen while the governor wants it shut, it helps to know something about what he calls his city’s “death spiral.” Perched in a rural corner of northwest New Mexico, Farmington watched its wealth vanish as its oil and gas industries went elsewhere. Its population is one of the fastest-shrinking in America. What keeps the lights on in Farmington is a coal-fired power plant whose fate remains uncertain. And all of that was before the virus leveled what remained of Farmington’s economy.

So in April, Mr. Duckett went to his office in City Hall to write new orders for his town. They amounted to no less than an existential plea, warning of crime, hunger, violence and homelessness if the lockdown continued. Though his role is nonpartisan, he said he votes Republican — and in that moment in April he laid responsibility for what came next with New Mexico’s Democratic governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham. “An economic disaster has been created,” Mr. Duckett, 42, said in a broadcast. Past proclamations by Farmington mayors had regulated fireworks and denoted an American Legion Day. The April proclamation declared an economic emergency and asked for a partial reopening of all shuttered businesses.

Be interesting to know if Mayor Duckett and his fellow government “workers” in Farmington are continuing to collect paychecks during the lockdown that is causing this death spiral.

Glenn Beck has observed that this may be the death knell for New York city, because many businesses may have found teleworking too attractive to want to go back and pay exhorbitant rents.

It is a conservative area. No doubt the liberal governor would love to wipe the city out.

I saw the headline, and thought it was about New York City.

Of course not. The New York Times is still at the stage of "denial".

Pretty much. I mean, how much would they need to pay you to attend a Broadway show now?

The Democrat Governors and Mayors are following the Venezuela model. The want to drive out the middle class and entrepreneurs leaving only the wealthy, the privileged, the working poor, and the very poor. That will permanently cement their lock on power.

Perhaps. But the question still stands.

I live in a "Conservative" area of Northern California, aka The State of Jefferson. Almost all of our politicians run for office as "Conservatives".

Government is our number one industry up here. Our County Supervisors pay themselves 80,000 year plus bennies and gas cards and who knows what-all.

They shut this county down but I guaran-damn-tee you, they are collecting every penny of their salaries.

Partner, u ain't lying.

Actually, the Gov'nor of NM has her head up her posterior.

She is a total joke but we will have to wait what happens after Nov. 2nd since President Trump is very popular in NM.

I have heard that NM might be making a comeback politically, at least as voting for president. They liked W Bush. (Waiting for incoming about border enforcement...)
