Why is FR obsessed with this incident? There have been far too many threads on this one topic.
I agree with that. I have paid no attention to it. As far as I can see, somebody did something stupid. That’s not news. It’s not interesting. It happens all the time.
Some people want this to be some sort of Trayvon Martin incident. I say we shouldn’t dignify it with any “great meaning”. Somebody did something stupid. I’m not even picking sides and saying Who did the stupid thing. I don’t care.
“Why is FR obsessed with this incident?”
Because - my opinion - a lot of folks on this site do not like California and New York blue culture. And do not want to become like them.

Multiple reasons.
To some, it was presented as two racist rednecks murdering an innocent jogger in cold blood, and any reasonable person would find that highly objectionable and want swift justice to be visited on the perpetrators.
To others, a violent criminal attacked a man trying to hold him until police arrived and he was killed in the struggle over the shotgun. People think the idea of punishing a man for shooting a violent criminal in self defense is insane and wrong headed.
To others still, the idea of pursuing a possibly armed thief and attempting to subdue him is too close to "vigilantism" which they find highly objectionable. It reminds them of the previous eras when Lynching occurred.
And finally, some people think the men were stupid and caused themselves trouble by taking action against a criminal, and because they got themselves into a mess, they deserve what they are going to get.
