DOJ considering whether to pursue hate crime charges in killing of Ahmaud Arbery

The Department of Justice (DOJ) is considering whether to pursue federal hate crime charges in the death of Ahmaud Arbery, the black man investigators say was shot by a white father and son as he ran through a Georgia neighborhood.

"The Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Georgia have been supporting and will continue to fully support and participate in the state investigation," a statement from DOJ spokeswoman Kerri Kupec said Monday.

Kupec continued: "We are assessing all of the evidence to determine whether federal hate crimes charges are appropriate. In addition, we are considering the request of the Attorney General of Georgia and have asked that he forward to federal authorities any information that he has about the handling of the investigation. We will continue to assess all information, and we will take any appropriate action that is warranted by the facts and the law."

RE: DOJ considering whether to pursue hate crime charges in killing of Ahmaud Arbery

Why not pursue this as a CRIME. PERIOD.

Will the victim be any more alive when the make it a hate crime?

Will the punishment be less severe if this were not a called a hate crime?

They want a Rodney King redux complete with riots. The prosecutor could have pursued lesser charges on the baton wielding Barney Fifes involved and gotten a conviction, but they opted for a harsher and more difficult to prove charge and got an acquittal and ensuing riots. That seems to be the goal here as well.

Hate crime stuff is a farce.

They already have enough to try them for an actual crime of murder.

They don’t have to invent crimes to try them for on top of it.

Outrageous. It is far too early for this. Let Georgia justice have its shot. There is no clarity whatsoever right now about the facts of this case. He was NOT a “jogger”, the men were overzealous and acted illegally (per Neal Boortz on Georgia law), but he also tried to stupidly wrestle a long gun away from one of the men. Georgia law is weird, as it has no 1st/2nd degree, just murder, felony murder and manslaughter. But the DOJ needs to stay the F out of this.

When was the last time the more frequent black on white violent crime received such national attention or ‘hate crime’ status? I guess that white lives just don’t matter as much.

Just having the DOJ consider whether or not this is a “hate crime” diffuses some of the mob anger being whipped up by the professional race baiters.

Everyday murder isn’t a federal crime. A hate crime is.

And why should the Federal government be involved in every local crime?

Does that mean that Washington does not trust the states to administer justice?

‘They already have enough to try them for an actual crime of murder.’

actually, I don’t think they have anywhere near enough for murder; and I don’t think anyone is going to be able to prove intent to kill...the crime, IMHO. amounts to reckless endangerment, or some level of negligent homicide, as they had to know chasing the guy down with loaded firearms could have resulted in exactly what did result...

I find it interesting how many of the same people rail on about ‘fake news’ but soak up everything the press says when it comes to race BS.

Hate crime? Heck no

Idiots who were playing cop who murdered a man? Yes

I hate the idea of a hate crime, crime is crime, does it matter if the criminal hated their victims? This is beyond stupid.

Not a fan of “federal hate crimes” the fed gov shouldn’t have power here.

Murder?

How can you try a dead guy for murder? You could try him for attempted murder, but - sucks for him - he was justifiably shot while committing assault and battery.
