The numbers they come out with are usually a guesstimate of the number of deaths in vulnerable people with chronic diseases and others who died as a result of probable infection with the influenza virus. Their assumption is that the influenza infection was the coup de grace and hence the “cause” of death. These mortality rates are all statistical constructs. Most clinicians do not consider this data as absolutely accurate.
