In fairness to the CDC, they are using the same methodology and algorithms that they use to determine the number of deaths from influenza. Not every death attributed to influenza is confirmed by a diagnostic test and almost none by definitive autopsy. The numbers they come out with are usually a guesstimate of the number of deaths in vulnerable people with chronic diseases and others who died as a result of probable infection with the influenza virus. Their assumption is that the influenza infection was the coup de grace and hence the “cause” of death. These mortality rates are all statistical constructs. Most clinicians do not consider this data as absolutely accurate.

Your excellent explanation aside, is it in the CDC’s interest to have over-inflated numbers? Maybe govt job security?
