Treasury Secretary Mnuchin Urges Governors to Reopen States to Prevent ‘Permanent’ Economic Damage

Some of President Donald Trump’s top economic advisers emphasized on Sunday the importance of states getting more businesses and offices open even as the pandemic makes its way to the White House complex, forcing three members of the administration’s coronavirus task force into self-quarantine.

The president and governors who will decide when to reopen their states are facing competing pressures. More economic activity and travel will likely lead to more people contracting COVID-19. But tight restrictions on which businesses can operate are causing millions of people to join the ranks of the unemployed. Decisions about how fast to reopen come with a general election less than six months away, and Trump and other incumbents facing the prospects of seeking another term in the midst of a public health and economic crisis.

“If we do this carefully, working with the governors, I don’t think there’s a considerable risk,” Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said on “Fox News Sunday.” “Matter of fact, I think there’s a considerable risk of not reopening. You’re talking about what would be permanent economic damage to the American public.”

Another 3.2 million U.S. workers applied for jobless benefits last week, bringing the total over the last seven weeks to 33.5 million as states restrict activities to slow the spread of the virus. Mnuchin said the jobless numbers “are probably going to get worse before they get better,” but he expected the economic numbers to improve in the second half of 2020 and that next year would be a “great year.”

The packed coffee shop is not the real issue. The real issue is loud talking. Also if anyone went there sick, and they are talking loudly, then a lot of people are going to be infected.

“...even as the pandemic makes its way to the White House complex...”

The reopening plan is dictated by the July July 27th final $600 federal payment for being unemployed and celebrating being alive.

At that point the governor’s really have no choice but to open...

They have no incentives to offer unemployed and cannot manufacture any green backs.

I agree! This staged reopening has given the Democrats an excuse to drag it out as long as they can. They are violating the constitutional rights of their citizens and need to be dealt with by the DOJ

Do these governors think they’re God? People have a right to determine their own destiny... or at least we used to.

Regardless, if Trump and Mnuchin want to “re-open” the economy, Trump should shut down these silly daily briefings. No one has a clue what they’re talking about anyhow. They simply serve to perpetuate hysteria.

$25 Trillion in debt is pretty close to “Permanent Economic Damage”.

Post-date the taxes for future generations to pay.

It’s over. We won. The curve was flattened. Not a single hospital in the US has reached capacity due to the Wuhan virus.

Go back to work. Open things up. Be smart, but git ‘er done.

I guess the FERAL government should have thought about this before issuing shutdown orders.

I hold Fauci responsible and PDJT for listening to this quack bureaucrat.

Simplest thing Trump can do is announce that any state bailout that lands on his desk before the country is 100% open will meet his veto pen.

So it was the demo rats that issued the shutdown orders? Right.

No, PDJT tripped on this one and listened to the so called experts and chose left instead of right turn. While others screamed this was a hoax and our country would be ruined shutting down.

Anyone knows, pulling the locomotive off the track stops the entire train. Unhooking a few cars does not stop the entire train for long.

Hell there is nothing out of these bureaucratic alphabet orgs anyone can trust. If they do not have the data or evidence they want they will manufacture it and the crisis to go with it.

This country has turned into one big sham, one after the other

Trump has got to stop hiding behind Fauci and say something. This stupid reopening plan, dictated by who knows who, has given the leftist governors even longer leeway to remain shut down. Please, President Trump, if you want to get re-elected, stand up and lead. And if you’re tired and don’t want to run again, then pick somebody who can. This country is going to collapse otherwise.

Put on your flame suit.
