Historic unemployment rate upends Trump's reelection bid
Associated Press ^ | May 9th 2020 | JONATHAN LEMIRE, JOSH BOAK AND BILL BARROW

The record unemployment rate reported on Friday captured the pain of a nation where tens of millions of jobs suddenly vanished, devastating the economy and forcing President Trump to overcome historic headwinds to win a second term.

Months ago, Trump planned to campaign for reelection on the back of a robust economy, now a distant memory after more than 20 million jobs were lost in April, leading to an unemployment rate of 14.7%, the highest since the Great Depression.

There's no parallel in U.S. history for the suddenness or severity of the economic collapse. The president is now tasked with convincing voters the catastrophic jobs losses were the result of the pandemic — not his management of the health crisis.

Unemployment reached as high as 25% in 1933 during the Great Depression. A broader calculation of unemployment from April's jobs report suggests the rate might be nearly that high now, as the 14.7% rate doesn't include people who left the labor force or still consider themselves employed despite not working.

“The last time we had unemployment rates in this neighborhood, it took us five years to get there,” said Erica Groshen, economist at Cornell University and former commissioner of the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. “This time, we will have achieved that in two months.”

The president during the onset of Great Depression, Herbert Hoover, was routed in his 1932 reelection bid. If that happens again, the GOP isn't just worried about keeping the White House. Voters who reject Trump may also turn against Republican candidates for Congress.

Joe Biden, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has ramped up intensity of his economic pitch, using an online address to blister Trump for economic “failings that have been present since Day One but are coming into sharp relief in the current crisis.”

Well it’s true. Trump is not running for reelection against Biden. He’s running against 20% unemployment, a trashed economy, a $6 trillion 2020 deficit, and Covid-19. That’s what he needs to beat, and convince the voters that he can do the better job.

Shouldn't be that difficult a task when he holds the Bully Pulpit. All President Trump has to do is remind people of what unemployment was under his watch before the Corona virus hit. Gives him pretty good credentials to lead the economy back.

I predict:

1. Jobs will come back as states reopen in stages. Dead wood will be eliminated & GRATEFUL employees will work harder & with more loyalty. Dead weight will be left behind.

2. Employees who think they can stay home & collect massive UNEMPLOYMENT will find they have lost their jobs & NEW, GRATEFUL persons are in their place. That fancy unemployment bonus $$$ will be gone—along with their job & their reputation.

3. The nexus between Bill Gates, Fauci, Brix, WHO and the Chinese will be exposed for the whole world to see. The world will see that this virus was deliberate & they will also find out how serious Gates has been about REDUCING the world POPULATION. IMO, he is evil.

4. Barr & his lawyers will have exposed thousands of more pages of FBI/CIA/OVAL OFFICE bad behavior & the citizens of the USA will rejoice in weeding them out. Even the least successful among USA population doesn’t like traitors, cheaters & bullies.

5. OBAMA, CLAPPER, BRENNAN, COMEY, VAL JAR, and MANY others will be under a flurry of indictments & will be negotiating like crazy to get a smaller sentence. The singing will sound like the CHORUS of high mass. CLINTON FOUNDATION & all of the Clintons will be swept up in this info.

6. Hundreds—if nor more—will find their passports frozen, themselves on the NO FLY LIST, and even the lawyers will be hesitant o take their case..because they might NOT get paid.

7. Schiff, Pelosi, Schumer, and many others will find themselves out in the cold, looking for a soft hidden place to land. Pelosi will miss her ice cream

8. Illegals will be self-deporting due to massive raids all over the country. ICE & BORDER PATROL will clean out the country. VArious citizens of BLUE states will be amazed at how many illegals have been here & for how long. (HINT: IF they cannot speak ENGLISH—they might be illegal). The removal of all the illegals will massively REDUCE the cost of running our schools...again, citizens will be appalled.

9. Newsom & other ‘Sanctuary States’ will find themselves without Federal funding and will be accelerating on the fast track to total collapse.

10. Sensible citizens will finally rise up & realize they have been lied to by the Dems for ages. NO ONE likes to be played for a fool—regardless of economic status or education. Union will also suffer.

11. Jails will be full of former Federal employees—all the way to the top and there will be more ‘suicides’ in jail, as the more powerful traitors try to shut up those who know too much.

12. Trump will be re-elected by a landslide.

Feel free to add more.....My mind is ahead of my typing.

13. Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, et al will be indicted & face the rest of their lives in prison. They will be subject to prison ‘suicides’ shortly thereafter.

14. VOTERS will stand in line personally for as long as it takes to VOTE IN PERSON & KILL the Mail IN Voting idea once & for all. Remember-—Al Gore wanted to throw OUT all military voting in 2000 because he said they didn’t have a postmark .....

Good golly.

How does the industry of “journalism” screen so successfully against competence that only idiots are employed?

If the rest of us could find out how they do that, and reverse it...

It sure sank FDR in 1936 (who actually WAS responsible for prolonging the Great Depression, unlike President Trump). Just ask “Landslide Alf” Landon how that went.

Yikes, don't remind me. What an embarrassingly useless RINO turd he was. I'm not surprised FDR won in a blowout with Landon as the "opposition" candidate. His platform was pretty much "I'll do exactly what FDR is doing with the New Deal, only not so much, and I'll do it BETTER!"

It wasn't just the cowardly circumstances of the 1930s that caused him to run as RAT-lite either, the guy was a liberal Republican he whole life, supporting Teddy Roosevelt's third party bid in 1912 (another "big tent" RINO who demands conservatives MUST vote for a RINO, but he does not have to do the same and practice "party unity" when a conservative like Taft is the nominee). And years later, he gave "bipartisan" support to LBJ's "Great Society" scheme.

I heard his daughter was a RINO too, though I don't know much about her record. And apparently he has a grandson in Kansas GOP politics now. $50 says that guy routinely backs RAT bills.

Looking back on it, 1936 might have been one of the few times I would have been tempted to vote third party for President, given that Landon was the "Republican" candidate and had zero chance of winning. I wonder if there were any decent third party conservative candidates that year?

I still say had it not been for Mr. Weiss, The Kingfish may very well had been President in 1936, if not 1940.

Republicans were utterly terrified of being painted as “just like Hoover.” Instead of attacking FDR en masse for not only not solving the Depression, but making it even worse, they were falling all over themselves to be FDR-lite (or even FDR-heavy).

FDR would portray himself as a “moderate” against the ultraleft radicals (Huey Long) who was trying to “save capitalism” from their more crazy schemes. Nice little trick. Then, of course, he was just as radical as they were and tried the full-scale Communist-style purge of the remaining non-leftist Dems for the 1938 elections and the attempt to hijack the Supreme Court. A real “moderate.”

Landon, sadly, has been the model for the decades since. They might offer benign opposition to the Dems, but have no intention of truly rolling back their radical leftist/big gubmint policies. Eisenhower was about the same as Landon.

The 1936 elections were about the nadir of 20th century politics. Out of 6 general election candidates, 3 were Communist tyrants (FDR, Norman Thomas, Earl Browder) and 2 were Socialists (Landon and Rep. William Lemke, a ND Socialist Republican and ally of Huey Long(!)), leaving just the Prohibitionist candidate, D. Leigh Colvin, who was the one-issue candidate. He’d have probably been the only protest candidate to vote for.

Because the GOP had been annihilated in the period, they hardly had much of a farm team of candidates. Landon looked good on paper because he had defeated a Dem incumbent in 1932 and won by a decent reelection margin in 1934. Compared to his opponent at the 1936 convention, the rabid Socialist-Isolationist Sen. William Borah (infamous for cuckolding the poor GOP Speaker Longworth by banging his wife and Teddy’s daughter, Alice Roosevelt Longworth), Landon looked like a right-winger. The other potential candidate ? Earl Warren, then the D.A. of Alameda County. What a horror.

As for Landon’s grandson, William A. Kassebaum, he served a single term in the KS House by narrowly defeating Shari Weber, the sitting Majority Leader, in 2002 (I think she may have been a Conservative). Because he beat her by a paltry 125 votes, she didn’t give up and continued on into the general election as a write-in candidate. He got 53%, she got 31% as a write-in, and the Dem was an afterthought with 16%.

He didn’t work out too well and Weber challenged him in a primary rematch in 2004 and beat him by 7% to reclaim her seat. He apparently didn’t run for office again and he endorsed the Demonrat Paul Davis for Governor against freshman Sam Brownback.

I don’t think FDR would’ve lost renomination in 1936. The belief was that Long would run 3rd party and perhaps split enough of the vote to elect a Republican candidate with a plurality (sort of a reverse-1912 situation, although FDR would’ve done better than 3rd place finisher Pres. Taft).

Roosevelt won in 1936 with 61% of the popular vote and 99% of the electoral vote. George Washington and Abraham Lincoln could have run together as independents and it wouldn't have prevented a Roosevelt landslide.
