Nonfarm payroll employment declined by 20.5 million in April, and the unemployment rate increased to 14.7 percent, reflecting the widespread impact on the job market of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and efforts to contain it. Employment fell sharply in all major industry sectors, with a particularly large decline in the leisure and hospitality sector.
The response rate for the household survey continued to be adversely affected by pandemic-related issues, while that for the establishment survey returned to a normal range in April. In addition, there were changes to the estimation methods for the establishment survey to better account for the historic number of temporary or permanent business closures in April. The impacts of the pandemic on the household and payroll surveys are detailed in the April Employment Situation news release and accompanying materials (available on the BLS website at https://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htm). For both surveys, we were able to obtain estimates that met BLS standards for accuracy and reliability.

Trying to avoid herd immunity is going to prove so much more catastrophic in the long run.

Our official unemployment rate in Canada is a bit less than that, but it’s a fraudulent number. The Federal government’s Canada Emergency Relief Benefit ($500 per week) has been accessed by millions who are not working, but who do not get counted on the unemployment statistics. While many will return to work, the restaurant, hotel, travel, retail industries will likely see significant numbers of permanent layoffs. The government benefit programs are covering up the true extent of the economic devastation.

Absolutely right. Herd immunity while protecting the most vulnerable is the best and only bad idea to end this.
There seems to be a refusal in certain political circles known as the Swamp to blame the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) for deliberately using the Wuhan virus to create an economy here which would prevent Trump get reelected. Letting that happen will create problems we don’t need. Time we point out the loss of employment and the corruption involved.
Every time an American looked at an item for where it was made in it came from China. Now Chinas reliance making everything was being threatened by a change in leadership in America which was a major consumer of those products. When Americans hailed their leaders decision to make many of them in their country US. Their politburo worried.
Worse yet opponents to the Chinese regime in power had its citizens protesting its policies , as in Hong Kong, since that change in American leadership wave the American flag and present his name when doing so. All of which presented those in power the need to destroy that leader Donald Trump.
Would a runaway plague created by a nation which could threaten populations of an enemy cause them to react by demanding extreme restriction of movement by its population to prevent its spread ? Thus wind up fragmenting its economy and create defeat for that leaders upcoming election.
