The Georgia Bureau of Investigation on Thursday night announced the arrests of Gregory and Travis McMichael in the shooting death of Ahmaud Arbery following a storm of public outcry after video of Arberys death was made public.
The father and son were both charged with murder and aggravated assault, GBI said in a statement. They will be booked into the Glynn County Jail, according to the bureau. GBI earlier Thursday asked for patience in its investigation, which began Wednesday.
Before GBI began its investigation into Arberys death, the Glynn County Police Department contacted the bureau to investigate allegations of threats against GCPD and individuals involved in the active investigation, the bureau said in Thursdays statement.
GBI added the investigation into Arberys death remains active and ongoing. The case is being investigated with District Attorney Tom Durden, who on Tuesday formally asked the bureau to investigate the death of Arbery.
Attorneys for Arberys family believe he was the victim of racial profiling after he was chased down while jogging and shot by two white men in a southern Georgia neighborhood as a third white man recorded the killing on video.
Arbery, 25, was shot and killed Feb. 23. Video of the incident has been widely shared on social media.
Gregory McMichael, a 64-year-old former police officer, and his adult son, Travis, 34, were captured on the video, which was taken by Travis neighbor, William Bryan.

From what I heard on the news it has been, and the video is much longer than the snippet they are playing on the news. It shows the whole chase. I would like to see the whole video.
After the Trayvon Martin and Michael Brown cases Im automatically skeptical when I see the media go into a frenzy about white men killing black men.
“put yourself in the victims place”
Hard for some here. Some can go part of the way, but not all of the way. On another thread I was challenged about bringing up “the state of race relations” in our country, many thinking that race SHOULDN’T have anything to do with this. On the surface, I, like everyone else here, agree with that sentiment. Trouble is, it DOES have something to do with it. For some (too many?), it always does...and THAT is the state of race relations today. It’s frustrating. It’s maddening. It also happens to be true.
Don’t believe it? Look at the voting history of Black America in ANY given election and then go back and listen to the speeches given by many of the Democrat candidates they vote for. When was the last time that a Democrat ran a campaign and didn’t try to stoke fear among Blacks by drawing attention to the “inherent racism found in the other party”? Here at FR, we know that this is pandering, race-baiting, false accusations, call it whatever. But that’s only seeing part of the issue. How are those comments received by the ones to whom they are directed? THAT is just as important. We’ve all seen and heard race-baiting on TV, in movies, in music, in textbooks...it’s everywhere. We’re all sickened by it, because it distorts. Well, that’s US (FR, White America). That’s OUR reaction. If I do my math correctly, that’s only 50% of the conversation when it comes to “race relations” though. What about the misinformed/ill-informed—how does that incessant drumbeat affect them? How does it affect a Black “young skull full of mush”? What impact does it play in forming his/her world-view. As a school teacher I can tell you it has its impact and I will spend part of my time trying to fill in the missing parts to the miseducation that has taken place (sometimes to greater, sometimes to lesser effect).
Flash forward to the incident: you talked about putting yourself in the victim’s place. Okay, two guys, shotguns out, trolling around, confronting me (this is where I hear a lot of people say, “but HE grabbed the gun” or “I would have asked ‘What’s up?’” or “If he didn’t do anything wrong, why did he get into it with these guys?”—and that’s where I think putting yourself in his place ends) If I’m putting myself in his place, I’m thinking about this encounter, “I’m about to be killed here!”
These comments will, of course, be dismissed as falling for...oh, how was it referred to yesterday...Ah, “the propaganda of Talcum X.”
And....... Africanization has destroyed great American cities.
I believe James Baldwin referred to “the fire next time”, so, yeah, destruction will ensue. We see it, don’t we?
If I saw your little sister, or your momma standing on the corner and it looked like she was waiting for a John to pick her up for a good time, and I pulled a shotgun on her for what I believe is breaking the law, and she tried to slap the shotgun away and it went off and Killed Her,
NO CRIME would have been committed right???
I think the Police Officers involved in this should also be Charge Criminally as Accessories after the fact for this Murder. They Ignored everything and let their Killer Buddies Go Free
Lets say the shooters, while holding weapons, made threatening or racist comments to this guy that made him believe he was going to die. He knew what was coming and that gave him every right to defend himself in any manner he could. Screw these guys, they had no right to chase him down, nothing was done to them or their property giving them cause to go after him.
No I havent but it sure seems rather easy to me. The dumb asses needed to mind their own business, if they felt threatened they could have called LE. Did he steal from them, did he trespass onto their property, did he point a weapon at them? My heavens, he didnt have a backpack, he wasnt carrying anything, he was wearing shorts and a t-shirt in the middle of the afternoon on a public street. They literally chased him down and shot him.
‘So you’ve seen the entire full length video?’
this full length video could be fifty hours long, and it’s not going to show one thing; the victim doing any harm of any type to these two individuals...there’s no way you can possibly filibuster that fact...
Now that I have seen pictures of them, they look exactly as Alberta’s Child posted; If they were out, they would be busting people going outside without wearing a mask.
Were done here.
Bingo. Who runs and attacks someone holding a gun? The dead perp was “unarmed” only until he attacked. Then he had as much control of the shotgun as the son did.
They didn’t chase him down.
He ran STRAIGHT FOR THE VEHICLE!
The videp does not lie.
The only snotty attitude I see is coming from you.
There was no “forced confrontation”. The dead perp could have easily gone where the truck could not.
But he chose not to. He chose poorly.
Don’t know what video you watched but I saw the dead perp RUN STAIGHT FOR the vehicle and attack.
