New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said Thursday that no one in the state can be evicted for not paying rent due to the coronavirus until August 20. "New York State will extend the moratorium on evictions for those facing COVID-related hardship for an additional 60 days - until August 20," he tweeted.
"The No. 1 issue that people talk to me about probably is rent, and fear about being able to pay their rent, and this just takes that issue off the table until August 20," he said at his daily coronavirus briefing.
Cuomo also said officials will ban any late-payment fees and allow renters to use their security deposits as payment.
"Everyone is just making do, and everyone has hardships, et cetera," he said. "We just want to make sure that those people who are most vulnerable are protected."
Cuomo said he doesn't know what is going to happen two or three months down the road. "But I can tell you: Whatever happens, we will handle it at the time. And that's what we've been doing with this situation all along, literally in two-week increments."
He said the state is working on relief from banks for landlords.
"There is no doubt a tradeoff between the tenant and the landlord," he said. "We are helping the landlords also, but on a human level I don't want to see people and their children being evicted at this time, through no fault of their own."

So 4 months without rent?. THEN the eviction process can be initiated. Should provide those so inclined to not have to leave until Christmas.
There are so many people that have left and have no intention of returning other than to collect their things . Cuomo should wave all rental agreements if requested.
Live rent free until August. Got it. The landlords have got to love you for that.

Ca-ching!
So Coumo-19 is just exasperating the problem. He needs to OPEN UPSTAE NOW.
Hey Cuomo-hole, why not just say all rent is free?
After all, everything is “free” to liberals.
Which, of course, is one of N reasons that math is not their friends - and N is a really big number.
But do renters have to pay rent they missed? Did I miss that part of the story?
Is the legislature voting on all of this or is Cuomo just issuing commands?
“When the people find that they can vote themselves free rent that will herald the end of the republic.”
Do landlords who pay utilities have to pay them.
Do landlords have to make repairs for renters who arent paying?
It is well past time for a class action lawsuit.
Yes, Im sure that Cuomo spends loads of time with many people that have trouble paying rent.
Foes tis mean the Rental Owners don’t have to pay Property Taxes?
What about the landlords if they own the property? NY could take the hit here and forgive property taxes during this time also. But NY will demand everyone else takes hits but not the state. They cheaped out of medical supplies even expecting the feds to pick up their slack.
Nothing NY does shocks me anymore. They ask for Co-Vid help, medical people from out-of-state come to aid NY and the Governor announces they will have to pay NY taxes for all work done in NY. The state of greed.
And the tenant can use there security deposits as rent.
This is totally lawless. This needs to go to the courts.
Is that that when they will have to come up with the 15,000 dollars back rent?
