As Texas begins to reopen for business, Gov. Greg Abbott has special guidance for people who are 65 and older, and its written in all caps in a state report released last week: STAY HOME IF YOU CAN.
In Colorado, which is also reopening gradually, the governor had a similar warning: Vulnerable populations and older adults must stay home unless absolutely necessary.
The White House says much the same in its plan to open America: All vulnerable individuals should continue to shelter in place.
Theres good reason for such warnings because COVID-19 has been much more deadly for older people.
As Abbott pointed out, those 65 and older account for about 20% of COVID-19 cases in Texas and 76% of deaths, according to completed fatality investigations in the state. Nationwide, almost 80% of COVID deaths have been in the same older age groups.
So how are older workers supposed to navigate this terrain?
Many believe theyve faced age discrimination in the past, along with concerns about their ability to adapt to new technology and take directions from younger leaders. But it was always verboten to blame their age, at least out loud.
Now federal and state leaders are publicly saying, Stay home if youre 65, at a time when over 30 million Americans have filed unemployment claims.
With this taint, finding a job is gonna be nearly impossible, said Alicia Munnell, director of the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College. A lot of em will just grab Social Security

This is going to get a lot of older people out of the workforce.
May be the real reason for the virus.
Very bizarre that it does not have the same mortality rate for the young
Tendencies of the virus Ripe for tin foil types
Wimpy Abbott strikes again.
Interesting that we haven't heard about the "Social Security" crisis or the "Medicare crisis" in a long while.
Maybe "they" found the Final Solution.
Hes not wimpy, and what he said was great advice for people who are now paranoid about leaving home. If they want to stay home, stay home.
What has happened to FR? Nothing a conservative Republican does is good enough to satisfy some.
I bailed on the market in January. I am more worried about pensions and Social Security.
All over 60 people (and everyone else too) should be loading with Vit C...and getting enough Vit D3/K2 to have D level of 60-80. Medicare would be smart to mandate free/low cost vit d3 tests.
Are you a member of congress by any chance? :)
I think it is the isolation of the nursing homes that causes all the deaths, no herd immunity.
“What has happened to FR? Nothing a conservative Republican does is good enough to satisfy some.”
They can’t relate to ordinary mortals - they’re such tough guys that the virus trembles at the mere mention of their name. It’s hard to see what’s “wimpy” about advising the over-65 group to stay home if possible, since they’re accounting for a vastly disproportionate number of fatalities.
“UOY KCUF, Guvner”
I’m 64 1/2 - had hoped to retire at 70, or at least at 66. But I may just jump ship now. Still praying about it.
This virus was almost immediately seriously attacking the older and infirm while being highly contagious. That is fact. The “blue” state governors knew this as did many in FedGov. It’s asinine to blame one man as president. His position is almost impossible with the way politics is in this America of today.
“This is going to get a lot of older people out of the workforce.”
2 or 4 years ago we were seeing reports about younger workers having problems finding a job because older were working longer. This might end that somewhat, if I am 68 and only need the Walmart part time job to pay for some small luxury, I might decide it’s not worth it. Lot’s of un-thought consequences.
My mother begged me at an early age not to put her in a nursing home. Even back in the 70's, people knew that nursing homes were germ ridden death traps. I respected her wishes, she died 5 days after being admitted to a hospital for cancer, and transported from her HOUSE.
So,you define “conservative Republican”? It’s nothing personal but Wimpy and his 13 committees is just not the leader we need at this pivotal moment in history. In normal times he could have got by like George Bush but not today.
I hope it works out for you, whatever you choose to do. Retiring is a big deal in a lot of ways. I got used to it a lot easier and sooner than the wife did (she’s a type-A).
Where are the all caps directives about how those healthcare providers and service businesses and retail MUST have in place policies of protection for the old and vulnerable?
Abbott needs a serious bitch slap! What the hell is wrong with him? Hydroxychloquine and z-pack! Thats your cure!
