SARAH VINE: Who'll dare to face the facts on obesity and Covid-19?
The Daily Mail ^ | May 5, 2020 | Sarah Vine

...According to data released by the NHS, being overweight raises the chances of dying in hospital from the illness by 40 per cent.

Having a body mass index of between 30 and 34 makes a person almost twice as likely to be admitted to ICU as someone with a BMI under 30. For those with a BMI of 35 or more, the likelihood is nearly four times higher...As the UK has the highest proportion of seriously overweight people in Europe, this is of grave concern. Yesterday, an NHS report said 67 per cent of men and 60 per cent of women here are overweight or obese.

I remember the Brits sneering about American obesity. Now they’re porkers, too.

Yep, being overweight is not good during these Cuomo-19 times. Next worse is living with lots of people or working near lots of people.

Best bet, keep your weight down, wash hands regularly, don’t be a close talker.

Wired has a piece that claims to debunk the obesity association. Google (or better yet, DuckDuckGo) the phrase “Wired obesity Covid”.

“Having a body mass index of between 30 and 34 makes a person almost twice as likely to be admitted to ICU as someone with a BMI under 30”

one MAJOR exception to this is someone who has a high muscle mass, whether naturally or by working out. You can have a high BMI and still have a low body fat ratio. The heavyweight body champ of the world, if shorter, would be considered greatly overweight or obese under pure BMI protocols.

Yes, I agree that the BMI scales have problems, but there are more and more people in many countries who shovel far too much food into their body. We’ve all seen the evidence of this at grocery stores when we watch the people ahead of us unload their carts.

Being overweight is not good anytime. It’s hard on joints, muscles. But what do you do when it is GI damage that causes it?

I usually weigh around 130 lbs, took a hard fall on the hall way to garage face first, minor concussion, but the fall damaged the VAGUS nerve to the stomach. In and out of the ER/hospital every couple of months, Idiopathic Colitis. Wrong diagnosis. By the time the PCP ran test the Gastro wouldn’t he found Gastropresis, SLOW DIGESTION takes slightly over 4 hrs to digest 2 slices of toast 2 scrambled eggs, laced with dye. 4 hrs of AB photos taken every hr. Took just over the 4 hrs to digest what normal people do in 1 hr. Your diet becomes Carbs, soft meats, backed or mashed non fiber food. It’s been 7 yrs and slowly the abdomen looks 9 months pregnant. I’ve had 4 boys so I’m aware how big you get. PAIN is constant, Colon gets hit hard, small intestine is painful as it doesn’t dump into the colon well. I’m to the point of 166 lbs because of Carbs and now Type 2 Diabetic. Med isn’t working well. I eat off a saucer to keep portions small. But Mostly Carbs puts weight on you. Diabetic diet does NOT mix. Add in severe spinal issues, you don’t walk much. Ready for a motorized wheelchair.

I self quarantined. I’m in pain, and not one of those 4 specialist I see can fix a DAMN thing.

yep.

The BMI charts show that I’d have to lose like 50 pounds.

Which I guarantee you ...would be EXTREMELY unhealthy, perhaps even inviting death. Certainly would crash the immune system.

Yeah but really, 40% over recommended weight really isn’t that much. Show me a curve of weight to COVID deaths and I might learn something. BTW, COVID-19 gets credit for killing a lot of people with other issues anyway.

Yeah, but it works on such pure probability assumptions, with such significant exceptions, that I hate to see this type of reasoning extended into our lives.

I thought the fat Southern rednecks were all going to die from coronavirus, bitterly clinging to their guns and Bibles?

That hasn't happened.

The highest correlation with death from coronavirus seems to be voting for Democrats, or living in places that vote for Democrats. (New York City, northern New Jersey, Chicago, Detroit, New Orleans.)

“BMI = Bogus Measuring Index“

It depends how you look at it. Compared to any given individual it’s bogus. Compared to the population as a whole, probably pretty close. Everything hinges on how you weigh those two. Everything..
