California Won't Make Stores Charge for Bags Amid Virus

California grocery and retail stores won’t be required to charge 10 cents per bag, and they can again hand out thinner, single-use plastic bags under an executive order signed by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

It’s a change that retailers have wanted for weeks, as many major grocery chains have stopped letting customers bring in reusable bags over fears of spreading the coronavirus.

California, which has some of the nation's strictest laws aimed at reducing plastic waste, banned stores from handing out single-use plastic bags and required them to charge 10 cents for all paper and plastic bags several years ago.

Newsom's order suspends those rules for 60 days. Stores can still charge for the bags if they want.

I am enjoying watching so much of the BS that the left has foisted on us for years fall by the wayside.

Paper bags vs plastic bags. Some stores are still charging for plastic bags and they need to STOP! By the way what do the stores do with the money they collect from plastic bags?

So people have to get sick and die...to get Marxist Democrats to reduce taxation.

The government gets the money. The government was forcing them to collect for plastic bags.

I stood in line to get into a Trader Joe’s. When it was my turn, I was told I couldn’t enter the store with my insulated $10 Trader Joe’s bag!

My wife and I and our children are California Expats. We escaped more than 15 years ago. We left behind family and friends. Quit our jobs, sold our home, and moved away. We thought it was intolerable then. It’s gotten exponentially worse since.
Our family and friends at the time thought we were overreacting. They all today wish they had made that same decision when we did. Now, they believe they are too old to quit and start all over again at this point in their lives.
They tell us how fortunate we are to have left when we did.

I may come to the grocer counter with lots and lots of items.
The clerk asks me ‘Would you like bags for that?”
So often I want to go sarcastic and say

“Uhmm let’s see, what do YOU think? Would you be able to balance a pair of cantaloupes, a whole chicken, bag of onions, bag of Cod filet, strawberries,a quart of Orange Sherbet, butter and on and on ....with just two hands?”

In every direction. And not just intolerable, but unrecognizable as well. I spend my last 10 years there shaking my head and saying WTF?

The government gets the money.

Unless things have changed recently, that is not true. The stores that are charging us for the bags are keeping the revenue, last I heard. Typical of Cali-unicorn-ia politics. They come up with laws that abridge our rights, then the fees that are mandated by the law goes to the business supplying the product.

Well, I guess Safeway will do a better job with the 10 or 20 cents they steal from me than Gruesome and his minions in Sack-a-tomatoes would. Maybe better, as I know many times before the Kung Flu panic, they would not charge seniors for the bags.

The CA taxing authority says that the charge is not imposed by the retailer:

No, the stores keep the money. The cost was imposed in hopes that we would bring our own bags.

I type corrected, then - most other places that a ‘bag ban’ has gone into effect, the government takes the money.

Welp, they got the diseases they apparently wanted, then.

“By the way what do the stores do with the money they collect from plastic bags?”

They pocket the profit and charge sales tax on top of it. These dick-taters are so stoooopid. I’m sick of ‘em.

Freely and decisively enacted by the idiot voters of this state. I don’t blame the stores at all. It wasn’t they who sponsored the initiative. Here in Placer County the stores were giving away the bags even before this new order
