Interstate 5 south of Los Banos...I drove through that area before...Traffic is not very heavy...
I am sure the money will be put in the evidence locker...
I have seen TV dramas where things disappear from evidence locker... Actually, there are cops who got busted for stealing drugs from the evidence locker...

Another great California road mystery!
How did the cops know to go after that specific SUV on I 5?

If only people on the highway had known, they would have joined in the chase by the hundreds.

Isn’t it legal for recreation there now? Perhaps the cost of regulations is keeping the black market competitive.

I met a lady in Narcotics Anonymous that had been married to a cop for a while. And got married to the cop SPECIFICALLY because of what he could bring home from a hard day’s work...

Out-of-state plates VERY likely to get stopped (for fake reasons) in Oregon and California. These guys were New York.

Could it be that this is just a new and clever way to distribute “stimulus” money without getting all tangled up in that “national debt” stuff?

Thanks I missed that detail.
Up here in N. Cali land, about once a month we used to see a non descriptive vehicle pulled over during rush hour with a broken tail light. Stacked up by the driver/others in the vehicle were stacks of plastic wrap and often a drug sniffing dog staring at the former driver and passengers.

True story:
The wife of the head of a high profile Drug Task Force found out a dancer was much more than an informant. She took his cocaine stash down to the Sheriff's office and slammed it down on the front desk. Within hours the Texas Rangers had everything locked down and POOF! No more Drug Task Force.

California has made the legal cultivation of cannabis prohibitively expensive due to all the regulations. They practically invited the black market to remain in place. And its thriving.

In the 1980s, a buddy of mines father was a state policeman.
He often showed off his newest firearms - And this rifle was from the Hatfield murder, and this pistol we got from a drug bust in Greensburg, and these shotguns were from a theft ring in Glasgow, etc.

Lieutenant to Sergeant conversation back at the precinct...
“How much of that cash has been turned in from that high-speed chase, Sergeant?”
“Well, sir, there were a lot of people picking that money up along the highway.”
That’s not what I asked you Sergeant. How much has been turned in?”
“Uh...$12...Sir.”
